I have seen the future of iced coffee.
There I was, wandering the grocery-store aisleswhen suddenly, next to the kombucha, opposite the rotisserie chickens, I spotted something I never thought Id live to see.
A blue and white cartonlike the half-pints of milk that come on elementary school lunch traysemblazoned with the words Blue Bottle New Orleans Iced Coffee.
This coffee is legendary in the Bay Area, and now that Blue Bottle has expanded to New York, Im sure its name echoes on the streets of Manhattan and Williamsburg, too. Brewed with chicory, cut with whole milk, sweetened with cane sugar, its a cold coffee beverage that is at once sophisticated and unpretentious. Its not an austere challenge to the Starbucks-trained palate like so much of high-brow coffee culture. It just tastes good in an interesting way.

Oliang!! Coffee, sesame seed, corn ground together, brewed together then sweetened and mixed with condensed milk, served over ice. It’s one of my many addictions.
Cane sugar also or sweet syrup for sweetening.
I tried some bottled stuff 30+ years back, but found it weak over ice. HOWEVER, post #8’s Pioneer Woman coffee concentrate recipe got me all hot and bothered, at least as far as coffee goes. Just scale the size down to a half-gallon for the first go...
Is Blue Bottle sold in New Orleans? I’ve never seen it here. Mrs Romulus likes Cool Brew, which is a locally made cold concentrate and comes in many flavors, including chickory. I don’t use liquid concentrates, preferring to brew from scratch. Because I’m a conservative and therefore view all processed “foods” with a wary eye. When I’m out of town, I look for French Market or Luzianne, both good quality brands and thoroughly authentic.
Me too. Coffee just does not taste the same cold. Can’t and never really tried to acquire a taste for it.
1. Casa Larios
To top this list, you really have to serve something special, and Casa Larios doesn't disappoint. Why is Casa Larios the best place to get coffee in Miami? Try the cortadito, a pre-sweetened blend of milk and coffee, and you'll know why. Nowhere does a cup of coffee go down smoother. The experience is heightened by the ambiance. Live-sounding music blares from the center of the room while patrons stand at the take-out window gossiping about the latest in South Miami. Often served with several small cups, the coffee and restaurant work in hand by encouraging social interaction between diners. At 7 a.m. when the doors open or 11 p.m. closing time, it is always good to enjoy some café at Casa Larios.
Have to schedule our trip to Miami to visit our Cuban friends. Finally have the RV and the time.
Both of those methods are lacking. For best iced coffee, brew a pot, pour half into ice cube trays and put the other half in the fridge. Put half a teaspoon of dark brown sugar in a glass, add cold coffee, stir until sugar is dissolved, add coffee ice cubes, and pour a dash of half and half over the top.
Or go buy a can of cold UCC coffee.
I like the coffee ice cube idea. I think what puts me off of cold coffee is the dilution that occurs from plain ‘water’ ice cubes. The water just doesn’t “go” with coffee and half & half.
Yeah but what about its %#@*ing bouquet??
How much did the company pay The Atlantic to write this stupid article?
Sounds like the cafe au lait you get at Cafe du Monde in New Orleans. 1 pot coffee + 1 pot scalded WHOLE milk. Sweeten it if you want.
I like iced coffee in the summer time but loose all interest when it gets colder.
In southern Italy I drank shots of `cafe freddo’ which was espresso sweetened to the consistency of chilled syrup.
Now, my morning joe is made the night before and taken cold, black, & barefoot. Wakes me up like nothing else will.
Have yet to set foot in a Starbucks but Dunkin’ Donuts coffee is as good as people say.
The best ‘iced coffee’ I have ever had, was served to me in a Bangkok restaurant.
Half hot brewed coffee, half coconut mild, over ice.
If it is in a bottle, as much as I hate them for their political ideology, the bottle Starbucks drinks work.
I live in Louisiana, and have not seen these blue bottles.
Vietnamese ice coffee for me.

” (or Vietnam) is the best.”
LOL!
“Vietnamese ice coffee for me.”
I have NEVER had a good cup of Vietnamese coffee. Any good coffee in Vietnam has been imported.
