Freelance workers a growing segment of California economy
LA Times ^ | 8/2/14 | Tiffany Hsu

Posted on 08/02/2014 11:21:10 PM PDT by Nachum

A short gig doing security for the True Blood television show. A stint driving for a rental car company. A week as a customer service representative at a retail store.

This is how Delvontaie Antwine, 34, makes do in California's economic recovery — earning a few scattered paychecks a month from odd temp jobs while living with relatives in Silver Lake.

Each week, he goes to a career center, where recently he was looking into positions transporting patients for Kaiser Permanente.

"I just need something consistent; otherwise, I'm like a puppy chasing its tail," he said. "I'm at the bottom of the totem pole right now."

It's a purgatory sometimes called the gray economy. Although the official state unemployment rate dropped to 7.4% in June, 16.2% of Californians — or about 6.2 million — were either jobless, too discouraged to seek work, working less than they'd like or in off-the-books jobs.

That's the highest rate in the country, tied with Nevada. The rate is higher, at 17.8%, in Los Angeles County, where nearly 2 million people aren't fully employed.

I guess you can write only so many lines of poetry, paint so many bowls of fruit or learns so many guitar chords before you start to get hungry. Miss Piggy Pelosi didn’t think of that. A man’s gotta eat.

“Although the official state unemployment rate dropped to 7.4% in June”

I read that the Wall Street Journal estimated unemployment at over 37% back in January.

That’s even worse than I thought.

“In front of any Home Depot.”

Correct me if I am wrong, but that is labor, mainly construction labor, is it not?

"I'm at the bottom of the totem pole right now."

That is racist against poles, he should be sent for pole sensitivity training and re-education.

“Basically it’s a slave economy.”

It is, yet the Republicans can’t get an advantage from it. In the past, Americans idolized people like Bill Gates because they provided opportunities for American workers to get a taste of a better life. Now Americans are likely to blame those wealthy entrepreneurs because they know the work is being exported or foreign workers are being imported to do it; the opportunities are much fewer.

Socialism and Bolshevism aren’t spreading in America’s middle class for nothing; an increasing number of people see they’ve been screwed by “global capitalism”, and they’ll run to the nanny-state for the basics.

I think it is about 50-50 construction and landscaping.

Also known as the economy where the government lies about the real unemployment rate.

We can trust that the FedGov’s reporting of the unemployment rate is every bit as accurate as the wait-time stats at the VA hospitals.
