Bobby Jindal is playing politics with Common Core, Louisiana students: Editorial
The Times-Picayune ^ | August 3, 2014 | Editorial

The political fight over Common Core academic standards reached an absurd level last week when Gov. Bobby Jindal filed a lawsuit arguing that an agreement he signed four years ago "threatens Louisiana's sovereignty as a state." In a way, he is suing himself.

The governor signed the memorandum of understanding in 2010 for Louisiana to take part in Common Core and the development of a multi-state test to measure student achievement. His administration even pushed in 2012 for legislation to strengthen the state's commitment to the new standards.

The effort, which originated with the National Governors Association, wasn't controversial then.

But as conservative groups lined up against Common Core, Gov. Jindal started edging away from it. Now he is determined to distance himself as much as possible from the standards and the new test that is tied to them. That includes claiming that the standards are a plot by the Obama administration, which isn't true.

Gov. Jindal's lawsuit was filed to counter the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education's decision to join a lawsuit filed by a group of parents and teachers in defense of Common Core.

The most regrettable part of all this is that the fight is intruding on the new school year, when the focus should be solely on students.

Which only goes to prove some student editorial boards are rotten to the Common Core.

It does threaten sovereignty. And I am glad he has changed his mind about the CC disaster.

For all the bad things I say about Governor Perry here in Texas, he at least had the common sense to SMELL A RAT when the feds were pressing governors to drink the Kool Aid of Common Core.

Now those same governors, like Jindal, are stuck LOOKING LIKE IDIOTS as they have to now back out.

If we could just ELECT Republicans that UNDERSTAND the motives of Democrats, particularly when it comes to EDUCATION, then we would have a lot less of this junk to deal with. It was TOTALLY UNNECESSARY both in LA and Oklahoma, and other states.

I would have to add that ANY PARENT that sends their kids to public schools are just as uninformed as Jindal is regarding the motives of the left.

Common core is the epitome of “anti-intelligence”. Exposing your children to this drivel will turn them into brain dead automatons of the state, totally incapable of any free thought. Reading, writing, and arithmetic, are the foundations of western learning. We put men on the the moon, and split the atom with these few simple principles. I have textbooks from the 1920’s to the 1960’s with subjects from engineering, electronics, physics, chemistry, or even calculus, and my kids can understand those easier than any new math in the current garbage posing as math or science in modern teaching.

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal is waking up late but at least he is waking up to the attempt by the federal government to control the state's school curriculum via 'Common Core'. A rigid teaching system that precludes much critical thinking and is camouflaged as 'state run' when it is actually federally run using federal 'standards'. Local input is pretty much non-existent. Its a con by the left. Jindal is right to fight it.

Exactly. The lawsuit is pretty much an admission that he got it wrong. I'm glad he sees it and is man enough to try to correct things.

Like many did with Obamacare, they agreed to something, Common Core, without knowing exactly what was in it.

In education, content is king and no matter how the Common Core advocates talk about the lofty purpose behind Common Core, its content shows it is primarily, more than anything else, a political vehicle and further INTRUSION into education, and primarily for one purpose, the control that comes with that intrusion.
