Tried this on a Dem pal late yesterday. He didn't like it too much :) Hit back with "We couldn't do everything right away."

My rebuttal was: You had the White House, the House of Reps and a filibuster-proof supermajority in the Senate. And didn't come CLOSE to matching what FDR did in his first 100 days. Why is that?

I believe that comes under the heading:

"Courage of their convictions" (They don't have any)

That, plus the Dems thing strategically in order to maximize the electoral impact.

They took a calculated risk that they could push off the Hispanic portion of their coalition long enough where immigration could be successfully used as a wedge issue against Republicans, solidifying the overwhelming trend of Hispanics voting Democrat. That's actually why they refused to do anything under Bush - didn't want a Republican to get any sort of credit for it.

But it looks like their risk didn't pay off like they intended. They now have Hispanic leaders and activists pissed at them for not having done it sooner. So they're desperate. And, quite frankly, they're freaking out that the GOP is all over the map on the issue. Making the process and outcome incredibly unpredictable.

A lot of folks give the GOP leadership flak for waffling on the issue. But I actually think that it's benefiting us because it's really preventing the Dems from locking down the Republicans as either being for amnesty (which will alienate the Conservative base) or against it (which can be used to turn the Hispanic Community further against Republicans). It's getting downright amusing watching the Dems spin themselves into increasingly heightened states of frustration given the difficulty of hitting an ever-moving target.
