Death Toll From Ebola in W. Africa Hits 887: WHO (Now Spreading in Nigeria)

The doctor who treated a man who flew to Nigeria and died of Ebola now has contracted the disease, authorities said Monday, presenting a dire challenge to Africa's most populous nation as the regional toll for the outbreak grew to 887 dead.

As Nigerian health authorities rushed to quarantine others who had been exposed to the doctor, a special plane landed in Liberia to evacuate the second American missionary who fell ill with Ebola. Nancy Writebol, 59, is expected to arrive in Atlanta on Tuesday, where she will be treated at a special isolation ward.

The second confirmed case in Nigeria is a doctor who treated Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian-American man who died July 25 days after arriving in Nigeria from Liberia, said Nigerian Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu.

Three others who also treated Sawyer now show symptoms of Ebola and their test results are pending, he said. Authorities are trying to trace and quarantine others in Lagos, sub-Saharan Africa's largest city of 21 million people.

The thing about ebola is that you pretty much know if someoen has it.

Black Vomit, sloughing off the lining of the intestines and blood leaking out of every body orifice are good clues.

Read the first couple of chapters in “The Hot Zone”.

It doesn't have to be airborne to get around.

Patient, running a fever leans on counter, touches door handles, handrails, sits in chair...and contaminates all these surfaces with sweat--and a viral load.

It only takes from one to ten organisms to infect.

The next person comes along and opens the door, leans on the counter, takes a chair...and the next...and the next.

There are likely far more common contact surfaces in an urban setting than in a very rural village, and far more opportunities to spread the disease. Ebola typically burned out or was contained in rural settings once funerary practices were overcome (in which mourners made contact with the body).

I am not so certain it can be contained in urban settings because of the multitude of common contact surfaces, surfaces which people will grab, lean on, or slide their hands along with even realizing it.

In the US, think elevator buttons, handrails, shopping carts, door handles, money, ATMs...just for starters.

I pray this never gets loose on these shores.

With an incubation period of 2 to 21 days, you might not know someone has it early on.

Early symptomatic phases are not so readily apparent and mimic Malaria, for instance.

By then, the victim is shedding the virus, but the disease is not yet advanced enough that the internal organs are liquefying, the skin sloughing, or the body leaking blood from every orifice.

“Lagos is a megacity, and the Ebola virus would certainly find lots of fresh hosts. It's also an international business hub - lots of people fly in and out of Lagos for business reasons.”

Nigeria also has a sideline that no one seems to be paying attention to and I don't mean the scam industry. Approx 40% of Nigeria's GDP is oil exports to the U.S. and accounts for around 10% of of the US oil supply. If the oil field workers are decimated either through disease or panic expect severe economic unrest in Nigeria and the start of shortages in the US.

ZEBOV (Zaire Ebola virus) has taken down a rather noticeable number of doctors and other medical employees.

It's not airborne. Just ask the Freeper-who-must-not-be-named, he wants every American with Ebola brought into the USofA for treatment!

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...
