"Anyone who bemoans the loss of, for example, textile-industry jobs in the U.S. never had one. "

Yeah, it's better to have them on some sort of welfare…./s

Anyone who bemoans the loss of, for example, textile-industry jobs in the U.S. never had one.

As a consumer of textiles for quilting and home decor, I wish it had never left. The fabric for sale is either highly overpriced or just crap. The prints on the textiles that used to be characteristic of America such as calico look like they were designed in a Chinese kindergarten. You can drive a truck between strands of the weave in the affordable broadcloth or muslin. Traditional fabrics like batiste or cotton voile have been adulterated with fillers and polyester. There's no love there anymore; it's just how cheaply can we make it, and how fast?

So the Dems are in so much trouble now they have to resort to ‘it’s Nixon’s fault’.

All the talk of impeachment has them reaching for their "nyah nyah, yours was the worst" defenses.

The big loss of the black vote for Republicans occurred during the '64 campaign and not in the seventies. In 1960 Nixon got 32% of the black vote. By opposing civil rights legislation Goldwater only got about 6% of the black vote in '64.

The so-called southern strategy is a myth concocted by liberals. There wasn't one program created by the '64 civil rights bill that Nixon stopped. There were no covert, subliminal appeals to racist southern whites to vote for Republicans. The fact was a very socially liberal Nixon was not as radical as George McGovern.

Blacks loved Kennedy, that’s what put them in the Democratic camp once and for all.

Nixon’s biggest crime?

Lemme see now, Nixon created the EPA - - - did he do something worse than that?

Excellent post, thank you. All can see that, just as an example, Nixon only got 13% of the vote in Mississippi. 1968 vote totals by state

“It’s an old & simplistic calumny - that Ku Kluxers switched to the Republican Party”

Exactly. Considering the fact that the republican party voted in favor of the 1964 civil rights bill in larger percentages than the democrats, why would those ku kluxers leave the democratic party for a party that voted in favor of civil rights by larger margins?

I had at least a couple undergrad polisci professors, both veterans of the Civil Rights Movement, identify the tipping point for Blacks as then-candidate Kennedy calling MLK Jr. as he was sitting in jail.

The crux of the Liberal “Southern Strategy” argument is that the Republicans didn’t match Dems action for action on Civil Rights. IOW it positions the Civil Rights Movement as a political bidding war where the GOP couldn’t and wouldn’t pander and bribe to the level Dems could and did.

You have the causation reversed. Increases in the minimum wage and more stringent OSHA regulations, among other things, made labor too expensive for domestic firms to manufacture most textile products and apparel at prices affordable to the middle class. You can still buy a hand-stitched shirt made in the USA, but be prepared to pay close to $100 for it.

This was, in the admirably concise wording of Wikipedia, an appeal “to racism against African-Americans.”

Newspapers researching history on Wikipedia now, are they?
