BBC News ^ | 7 August 2014 | Analysis: Jonathan Paye-Layleh, BBC News, Monrovia

Liberian soldiers have set up a blockade stopping people from western regions affected by the Ebola outbreak from entering the capital, Monrovia.

It follows the president's declaration of a state of emergency to tackle the outbreak that has killed more than 930 people in West Africa this year.

In Sierra Leone the security forces have now imposed a complete blockade of eastern areas hit by Ebola.

A very long article with details. People in areas that have been blocked from entering Monrovia are in dire straits, as they apparently shut off from supplies, groceries, etc.

This is going to get very ugly very fast. It's already a tragedy of epic proportions. May God have mercy on these people.

This might belong on Bring Out Your Dead. Looks like people will be dying from more than Ebola, as food and other supplies dwindle in blockaded areas. Unimaginable.

They need to arrange drop off points for supplies and groceries and manage them in a way that minimizes human contact.

Isn’t that kind of national emergency what National Guards are for? Do any of the African Nations have an equivalent of our FEMA or our National Guard? They should not let these people just starve. I’m surprised those blockades are just now going up. Airport travel should be stripped to the bare essentials. If this gets worse, it would not surprise me to see China step in and take heavy handed control of some regions. I heard China has made a loan of some $10.Billion Dollars to the city of Bagamayo for the construction of a modern day container terminal. Bagamayo is a city in Tanzania.

A local woman, named Marie Shaba spoke to a reporter, “Soon, nothing will be as it was in Bagamayo, because now the new rulers of the world, the Chinese, are coming!” I understand why they would have this opinion about China.

Yes, I agree. It’s horrible. I really think that somebody should literally be airdropping supplies for these people.

So, cut off from normal food supplies, look for bush meat to increase as a food source...

Pretty ghastly. But they are probably eating bush meat anyway.

Could be. Bush meat is thought to be how ebola gets passed to humans.

Fruit bats are carriers of Ebola virus in West Africa. The people may or may not understand this.

What I’ve read is that fruit bats are the reservoir for ebola between outbreaks.

Fruit bats and great apes will feed at the same sites and great apes become infected through contact with the bats.

Infected apes are killed for food, ‘bush meat’, and the hunters are exposed to ebola when dressing their game.

http://www.naturalsciences.be/science/projects/gorilla/aboutgorilla/ebola

” The source of these outbreaks are well documented, and all (some of which had multiple sources) occurred after people had handled animal carcasses found in the forest (mainly gorillas, chimpanzees and duikers)”

Other sources say that fruit bats are also consumed directly.

Thanks for the info. An article last week also mentioned that fruit bats are favorite foods for native people. Bushmeat may be the last meal for so many of them. The revenge of the Apes, perhaps.

No worries, man. Ebola isn’t spread by casual contact.

The rumor mill in Mexico is on fire about a medical student in Mexico City who returned from vacation in Africa with Ebola symptoms. They even gave his name and age on one website. The Mex government has isssued a statement denying it.
