I guarantee that we will not hear the words “weather is not climate “ in news coverage of these storms.

We’re about 800 feet elevation so not worried about storm surge.

Yeah, we aren't talking about an Alaskan Bay style Tsunami so you should be good...

They’ll turn up in the trunk of a damaged car with more Rose Law Firm billing records.

I wonder if the contents of Al Capone’s vault will wash up on shore as well.

Re: Poor construction.

Thought about asking about that, though figured (a) it might sound insulting; and (b) there might be enough earthquake-proofing to handle this. The question I have will be whether there's enough wind lifting to take a roof off... that's one part of the building code that was specifically beefed up in Florida (hurricane straps), and would be my biggest concern for you... especially if there's nearby up-sloping terrain.

Re: Trees

Right. My hope there is that there is enough tree density to buffer you - and the trees - against the wind.

That's the big reason we native Floridians board up windows - they're vulnerable to breakage, of course, but once wind can get inside the structure, the roof is even more at risk.

I think my roof is in pretty good shape. It's a corrugated metal roof nailed down very well. There are hurricane straps on the underside as well.

I'm not really worries about junk flying around from neighbors since we're surrounded by thick forest and all our junk is stowed and secure.

My biggest worry is falling trees and limbs. I've already had a few incidents in the past.

Well the rains have begun and the breeze is picking up. Gonna take a hot shower now, hopefully it won’t be my last for a while if the power goes out. I’m fully expecting loss of power. It is a regular occurrence here and I can’t imagine it not happening during this event. The big question is how long it might be out for. Got my cash from the ATM and the car tanked up.

If loss of power is a regular occurrence there, have you considered investing in a generator? Also, if you need to use water from your pool, I would recommend pouring it thru a Big Berkey water filter.

training my cat

Most would have better luck and less blood loss training their spouse. Not good luck nor eliminate the blood, just less problems than the cat.

Will any of that water make it to California? We could use it!

Got a Honda generator and a 8qt filter from REI for just these situations. Most Hawaiian residents are up on this.

A lot of people do not realize that when power on the islands goes out, water usually stops as well shortly after.

Generator can save your food, but not flush your toilet or save you from dehydration.

Prayers up that y’all stay safe and the worst you get is wet. I’m up in Kapa’a on Kauai visiting family, so we have it easy, looks like. Supposed to fly out Sunday afternoon via HNL so probably have to dodge Julio...

Leilani Estates outside Pahoa. It is getting pretty gusty at the moment.

Thanks all for prayers. God is greater!!

Kauai in the past has had more serious weather than the Big Island. Stay safe.
