On a similar side, I knew a guy that was trying to start a garment company in Liberia. Mostly selling to locals and his business was doing OK. The problem was that he had to compete against American churches that were sending clothing by the container load that was given out free to the people.

He eventually had to close the doors. Sometimes, what feels like the right thing is not the right thing.

the meme that is far too often played is that the poor africans cannot do anything for themselves, and that the ‘rich’ countries have to provide for them. it is racist and demeaning and perpetuates poverty and dependence.

a couple of expressions come to mind, and not just the one abotu giving a fish vs. teaching how....the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and killing with kindness, for example
