Police: Officer Wasn't Aware Michael Brown Was Suspect in Alleged Robbery

Police Tie Victim to Robbery, but Later Say He Was Stopped for Different Cause By Mark Peters and Ben Kesling

Updated Aug. 15, 2014 8:36 p.m. ET

FERGUSON, Mo.—Local police released new details in sometimes chaotic fashion Friday about the shooting death of an unarmed African-American teenager, which sowed more mistrust in a community already lacking faith in law-enforcement efforts.

Early Friday, Ferguson police identified Darren Wilson as the officer who shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown in an incident that has sparked a week of unrest in this St. Louis suburb as well as protests in cities across the country.

Chief Thomas Jackson also released documents and surveillance video, alleging that Mr. Brown was tied to a robbery at a convenience store shortly before he crossed paths with police. Hours later, Mr. Jackson held another news conference in which he said Mr. Wilson, who is white, wasn't aware of the robbery when he stopped Mr. Brown.

Many officers have been murdered, and or seriously injured by felons after the officer makes what he thinks is a routine stop of either a traffic violator or a person on the street. The person being stopped believes that the officer is well aware of the crime that the person has just committed, and trying to avoid the police, (think robbery, murder), but the officer unknowingly is caught unaware and many times in a fight for his life when assaulted by that felon.

Police protocol: ‘No such thing as a routine traffic stop’
Traffic stops and related incidents are the second biggest cause of police deaths

Yup.

Police have said Mr. Brown allegedly assaulted the officer and the two struggled over his gun inside the officer's police car.

Mr. Brown knew what the deal was and his actions show it. The police officer had less knowledge, but he did know how to react to circumstances.

Mr. Brown's family accused local police of trying to discredit the teenager, and the disclosure fueled anger among protesters.

It can no longer be denied. Truth is racist.

The question is whether he was aware that Brown was trying to get his gun away from him, and whether he was conscious of the fact that Brown was literally twice his size and fully capable of killing him with his bare hands alone.

Police report here:

AUGUST 15—This is the Ferguson Police Department report that names Michael Brown as a suspect in a strong-arm robbery that occurred minutes before the Missouri teenager was shot dead last Saturday by an officer who had confronted him and a friend as they walked in the street.

The document was released this morning by police who also identified Officer Darren Wilson as the cop who killed the 18-year-old Brown.

On another thread is a report from the policeman’s friend that differs.

She states he told her that he heard the report of robbery go out on the police radio as he was stopping Brown.

Yeah, but the suspect was aware that he was a suspect in an alleged robbery.

If the Ku Klux Klan were to make a movie to parody, mock and denigrate black Americans, the movie clips would look exactly like what you’re seeing in Ferguson today.

Whether the police officer was aware that Brown was a strong-arm robbery suspect or not (apparently he was not aware) is not the point. The point of releasing the tape of the strong-arm robbery by Brown was that it showed Brown to be a thug who was capable of provking a confrontation with police; however, it did not prove his killing was justified.

A friend of Officer Wilson says that Officer Wilson DID know of the robbery...
He pulled up ahead of them. And then he got a call-in that there was a strong-arm robbery. And, they gave a description. And, he’s looking at them and they got something in their hands and it looks like it could be what, you know those cigars or whatever. So he goes in reverse back to them. Tries to get out of his car. They slam his door shut violently. I think he said Michael did. And, then he opened the car again. He tried to get out. He stands up.

And then Michael just bum-rushes him and shoves him back into his car. Punches him in the face and them Darren grabs for his gun. Michael grabbed for the gun. At one point he got the gun entirely turned against his hip. And he shoves it away. And the gun goes off.

Well, then Michael takes off and gets to be about 35 feet away. And, Darren’s first protocol is to pursue. So, he stands up and yells, “Freeze!” Michael and his friend turn around. And Michael taunts him… And then all the sudden he just started bumrushing him. He just started coming at him full speed. And, so he just started shooting. And, he just kept coming. And, so he really thinks he was on something.” (link)

Just one of many police officer deaths as a result of what was believed to be a routine stop:

Investigator Michael Ridges was shot and killed after stopping three suspects who fitted the description of men committing vandalism to a local home.

As Investigator Ridges was reviewing a series of vandalism incidents that occurred around a Prospect Heights home he noticed a car with three men inside who closely matched the physical descriptions of the offenders in the case. Investigator Ridges called in a description of the vehicle and then stopped it. Once stopped, all three men exited the car and while Investigator Ridges was checking their identities, one man drew a concealed gun and shot Investigator Ridges once in the head and once in the hand, fatally wounding him.

The suspects were caught a short time later based on Investigator Ridges’ original radio description, along with a description provided by a citizen who witnessed the incident. It was later revealed through a police investigation that the three men were en route to commit a contract murder at the Prospect Heights home where Investigator Ridges was investigating the vandalism incidents.

One of the suspects was sentenced to life in prison and a second was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Investigator Ridges had served with the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Department for five years. He was survived by his wife
