I’m surprised at the notion that ANY police car today, well into the 21st century, is not equipped with a dash cam. If there wasn’t, I expect SOMETHING recorded the incident (police radio logs, nearby surveillance cameras, people with cell phone cameras, etc); if not, the absence thereof does not diminish the testimony of all other related incontrovertible proof (perp robs store, perp assaults clerk, perp walks down street away from victim, cop confronts perp, cop suffers skull fracture, perp terminated with multiple front entry wounds).
If the North Hollywood Shootout is to the up-arming/up-arming/up-militarizing our police force, then I guarantee you that THIS incident will cause just about every public servant to think about either investing in their own GoPro camera (or equivalent body cam) on their own dime, or city/county/state attorney's will demand that their LEOs wear them.
My opininion? I want all cops to be issued a firearm, a radio, a dashcam with microphone, and a body cam.
Cameras are getting smaller and cheaper. I say the more LEOs wear them, the better. Just make sure that no one can muck with them after an incident.
I have a cam in my car and at best it captures 35% of incidents. Great if your in front of car as in traffic stops. I always try to stay on cam but to get others to is like herding cats. The cam is not 360 degree.
I am too but I checked the Ferguson City Budget where it shows the purchase, and the statement that they weren't installed due to lack of funds came directly from the Chief of Police.
