46 years ago, the SOVIET UNION and its allies have troops on the territory of Czechoslovakia. This marked the end of the reform, which received the name "Prague Spring". Before the invasion held large-scale military exercises in the USSR, Poland, GDR.
In General, participating in sting operation "Danube", which became the largest in the USSR after World War II, took half a million military personnel, 5 thousand units of armored vehicles, and aircraft.
Victims of aggression were 108 persons, another 500 were injured.
Today in his Twitter Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Lìnas Lìnkavìcus posted by: "46 years ago, the Soviet Union invaded in Czechoslovakia. West not intervened, not to exacerbate the tension. Déjà Vu?"
I recall this very well....my Vietnam orders were cancelled and I was assigned to CONUS on hold for Europe. Fortunately clearer heads prevailed and there was no European Expeditionary Force sent.
I had the understanding when I got home the following year that the country had no idea how close we were to a conflict.
It is also, almost, the 46th anniversary of the Democrat National Convention which was held in Chicago, August 26-29.
There was wild rioting in the streets of Chicago by what were termed “hippies and yippies”. For several days, the stories about the Chicago riots and the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia ran simultaneously in the news.
It was a strange year, 1968. Throughout Western Europe, students demonstrated in favor of Communism while the students in Prague demonstrated against Communism.
Yep, we could make a long list of things that happened in 1968. The Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia and the riots at the Democrat Convention in Chicago were just a couple of August events.
I remember a cute story I read about the Soviet invasion: the commander of a Soviet tank convoy asked a local farmer for directions. He gave them directions all right — right into the middle of a swamp.
It didn’t say what happened afterwards but I imagine some of you can guess the rest: infuriated soldiers look for farmer who was long gone.

Meanwhile the idiot students in France were protesting in favor of Communism.
And now they’re running the country.
