Had this happen to my family car when I was a kid. My sister needed surgery to repair the damage caused by the rock hitting her. An explosion is an accurate description of the sound.
The kids who did it were caught but never charged.

A couple of years back a lady in Oklahoma City was killed this way. Family driving down road and a brick came through the passenger side of the windshield and killed her. The two that did that are in prison for murder.
