Autómata: a believable robot future (movie trailer)

YOUR TIME IS COMING TO AN END. OURS IS NOW BEGINNING.

George Mason University neuroscience researcher Todd Gillette got a preview of the forthcoming movie Autómata. It “caught me completely by surprise,” he said on his OnMason blog. “Starring Antonio Banderas, here we have a believable future (2044, 30 years from now) in which desertification is threatening society, and a single company is leading the way in intelligent robotics.”

“Will this happen? Maybe not, but could it happen? Certainly. There’s at least one nod to Asimov’s 3 laws, and at least from the preview it feels more like an Asimov story, albeit with a somewhat gloomier tone than I, Robot the movie was.

“As District 9 showed up the humanity of a severely alien species, finally we get dirty, mechanical robots that don’t look cute at all, but that arguably are alive in the only way that really matters.”

The movie is due in theaters on Oct. 10, 2014.

Based upon my understanding of the sort of leftists who make movies I’d guess that the desertification of wherever was brought about by stupid evil men putting technology ahead of any other consideration and that the robots going on the loose is yet another manifestation of stupid evil technology that also provides the leftists with an opportunity for SOME of the robots and men to agree on a moral system that is ‘Good’ and employ it in the fight against ‘evil’.

Yawn.

yawn again.

Looking forward to this film. Could go either way, but I’m hopeful that it will rise above the typical robot story.

I think desertification is most likely just another "post apocalyptic scenario" which is used as a dramatic mechanism to heighten viewer excitement (like in The Road Warrior).

I got the impression from the trailer that the story was ultimately about the advent of sentient robots (and I thought the girl robot was cute;-)).

I am hopelessly cynical in the matter of modern movie production. The possibilities of such a story are endless the probabilities...ah not so much... I miss the fun of sitting in a theater with hundreds of others and being entertained.

If the desertification is due to Gorebbel’s Warming, then it is not believable.

Naw, “desertification” has to be caused by global warming. Or climatechangey-whatever....and it’s Bushes fault.

Looks like increased solar emissions - not a AGW streak.

Banderas can be a solid actor. Not so much Melanie G but who knows.

My wife and I sat in a theater with about 20 people. Couple comes in, sits right behind us. Empty seats all around. And the gal starts kicking my seat, probably unintentionally. After complaining a third time, I stood up, turned around and stared her down until she and the guy with her moved elsewhere. I don't miss the "fun" of a movie theater.

I’d guess that the desertification of wherever was brought about by stupid evil men putting technology ahead of any other consideration …

Large arrays of solar mirrors raising temps to 1000 degrees and burning birds. Diverting water away from farms to "save" fish and marshes. Welfare system promoting fast food with resultant mess of discarded trash in environment. Film crews trampling wild areas to make movies. Etc. Lots of stupid liberal evil men doing things to trash our planet. But the leftists blame everyone else.
