Please don't encourage those who think one must be prepared for a ninja onslaught to be responsible gun owner.

Does that sound like a movie script? Hell, I read about those real-life scenes every day in the paper.

Yeah, it kinda does if you're a secret agent or a professional assassin.

I can honestly say I have never seen anything in the paper that required that level of caution to avoid trouble.

Further, the idea some criminal mastermind is going to silently break into ones home, stumble upon your weapon (not having one of his own), and finally use it against you as you stumble into his nefarious activities is laughable.

Is it possible: sure. But if it actually happened I'd have to conclude God is after me.

I ordered a Glock 30 .45

One of the finest choices out there. I carried one for many years.

A ninja onslaught hadn't occurred to me.

But serious drug-driven crime has occurred to people close to me, including family members. In one instance an elderly woman and her three grandchildren were murdered, in her home in broad daylight, shot in the head with a .25-06 rifle by a deranged addict who had somehow concluded they were the enemy.

And friends of mine--people with nice, isolated homes and valuable possessions--have in fact fallen victim to home invaders who spent considerable time (days, in one instance) locating, selecting and removing (or destroying) said possessions.

If you are just that smugly reassured by your local newspaper and your own highly tuned security acumen, I am happy for you.

You might want to save your counsel and your insolence for those who haven't experienced otherwise.

Something Was Wrong--and It Wasn't a Ninja!

You can rest assured my “smug insolence” is secure in that your sketchy anecdotes seem to be only marginally related to the circumstances we originally considered.

I too, could paint lurid pictures, having once lived with a roommate when he was arrested and convicted for a grizzly shotgun murder. That doesn’t mean I confuse the possible with the probable to the point I risk being labeled a “mall ninja.”

Suffice to say, nothing can replace being armed with both a weapon, and the will to use it, when ones personal S hits T F.

No, there probably wasn’t enough detail in my “anecdotes” for a jaded old self-defense expert like yourself to get off.

As to dissimilar situations you are the one who claims to know what every circumstance is or will be.

I will grant that you certainly paint a lurid picture of your roommate murdering a grizzly. You’re just lucky it wasn’t a tyger.

...you are the one who claims to know what every circumstance is or will be.

When I isolate this comment for you, can you recognize how asinine it looks to anyone who is NOT a "tween" girl?

I keep it within reach, leaning against the corner, barrel down

NO! If you do that with a rifle, all of the caliber will leak out. If you do that with a shotgun, all of the gauge will leak out. You will end up with a 0 caliber / 0 gauge weapon!!!!

I noticed their building on the Parkway looks abandoned. I don’t know how long . . . as I’m usually trying to merge there . . . but I haven’t taken the Huntsville Times in at least 10 years.

At least some are carrying something but too much confidence in the little mouse guns is false security, based on a perceived holy totem to ward off evil without recognizing the weaknesses: Limited capacity, accuracy, power, and probably no back up mags because “I don’t need more than (insert power #) shots”. People should watch video of thugs getting shot — then promptly running away...still moving...still a threat. Carry biggest gun you can handle and more ammo.

Also because of the paleolithic savagery or because it doesn’t go bang, some people tend not to perceive blades as an option, when they can often times work faster and more efficient than a handgun. Want to get guaranteed lethal? Have a long gun.
