A 400-kilogram machine part fell into a nuclear fuel pool at Japan’s crippled Fukushima plant Friday, the operator said.

Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), said it had not detected any significant changes in radiation readings or in the level of pool water at the No. 3 reactor.

Check with Archimedes about that last bit. I'm pretty sure the water level changed just a bit.

Yeah, yeah, we ALL know that.

However, (comma), fuel pool levels are controlled:

1) Low level will cause pumps to start to add water to restore the level to a normal operating band.

2) A higher level is self correcting by overflow weirs and surge tanks.

So, in ‘nuclear-speak’ really what is said is that that 400kg component that fell into the pool did not breach the pool liner, resulting in a loss of water (level decreasing, or if you will, ‘significantly changing’)

It probably did but with the wind whipping up waves on the fuel pool since the structure that used to be over the pool is gone, it’s hard to tell.

The minor rise wasn’t detectable because of the leaks.

Nice catch, FRiend. But the article DID mention the volume of the equipment. I can call safe on the no detected water level change for equipment that small. I’m certain it was some kind of robot.
