AUSTIN (KXAN) — University of Texas Police are investigating the use of a drone over Darrell K. Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium Saturday night during the Longhorns’ home opener.

KXAN’s cameras spotted the drone flying above the stadium. The drone had red and green lights on it. It also had a camera.

We weren’t the only ones who spotted it. Police did too. During the second half of the game, officers found the operator of the drone, made him land it and then took the man into custody.

The department told KXAN the man was a UT student, and he was taken in for questioning.

UTPD spokeswoman Cindy Posey released the following statement to KXAN Sunday:

“UTPD observed an unauthorized drone in and around the Darrell K. Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium and watched as it maneuvered and landed on San Jacinto. Officers located the operator, a UT student, who was detained and transported to the police station. The drone was seized, the student identified, questioned and released pending further investigation.

Our top priority is the safety our students, employees, fans and visitors. UTPD Chief David Carter stresses that we are concerned about the use of drones and are investigating the incident thoroughly. The university continually works with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to maintain the highest levels of safety on our campus.”

The perp didn’t use GPS autonav to disguise himself and his location! Not to mention non-reflective paint on the drone...

Thank god the state was able to crush this terror scheme. Otherwise, next thing you know, college students might engage in pranks.

We might as well get used to them. This little guy buzzed me last November at the Knoxville Buddy's 5K for Cancer. It flew right down in front of my face and after I got over my shock I was able to snap a picture with my phone before it went off to buzz somebody else.

hardly a drone, more like a quad copter, but hey I suppose drones could weigh from a few ounces to many many pounds, just not as I see it. Drones have big wings lots of power and plenty of stations to hang serious weapons on. for me I guess twenty foot wingspan makes the difference between a radio control airplane with up to a ten foot wing span.

I’ve seen the big drones but this was a sneaky little guy with a camera mounted in it. I bought my husband one that is similar last year. It’s the little sneaky ones that you have to watch out for. :-)

I’ll say this about that, at least they aren’t up where the FAA should be concerned. What’s to worry about tree top surveillance?

...and they are close enough to be shot down by a BB gun.
