President Obama may not move on executive actions for immigration reform this summer, the White House conceded on Tuesday.
"It's hard for me to at least at this point draw any clear conclusions about what the president's timing will be," White House press secretary Josh Earnest said. "There is the chance that it could be before the end of the summer. There is the chance that it could be after the summer."
The White House is thought to be considering a delay of the executive actions because of concerns from vulnerable Senate Democrats, many of whom have asked the president not to act before Novembers midterms. During a Rose Garden address earlier this year, Obama told reporters he expected recommendations from top administration officials "before the end of summer" and planned to adopt them "without further delay."
But the president last week sidestepped questions on whether the timetable for executive actions could be pushed back.
Obama hinted that developing the administrations response to this summer's surge in migrant children crossing the border could affect progress on broader immigration reform efforts.
Some of these things do affect timelines and we're just going to be working through as systematically as possible in order to get this done, Obama said. But have no doubt: In the absence of congressional action, I'm going to do what I can to make sure the system works better.
Earnest on Tuesday said the president was "basing this decision much more" on the substantive issues at hand, and that the administration was not "focused" on the politics behind the issue.
He also argued that the eventual moves were much more important "than the timing."
"What the president is concerned about is doing the best that he can to address as many problems as he can," Earnest said.
But Earnest conceded there was "no doubt that the White House has demonstrated" a desire to help Democrats battling for their political lives.
He also tacitly agreed that the president risked blowing through his own self-imposed deadline, saying Obama was using the "conventional widespread understanding" of "without further delay."
"I don't think the president was trying to be ambiguous," Earnest said.
The White House has still not received the recommendations, which are being formulated by Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, and does not expect those recommendations within the week.
Earnest described "an open line of dialogue and communication between the White House and individuals who are working on this review."
"I would not anticipate that the president will get the final recommendations this week," Earnest said. "That could change.
That doesn't mean the president isn't in regular consultation with members of his team both here at the White House and at these agencies about their ongoing review," he added.
The Dims are begging the Kenyan Fraud not to go forth with executive order amnesties until after the elections.
How could it be that an amnesty by Obummer would hurt Dims? After all, Rove, Priebus, Rubio, McCain, Graham, Alexander, Corker, Ryan, et al. assure us that if Republicans don't back amnesty, they will be stuck in a loser position forever.
Maybe the Dims need Upchuck Schumer to come out and lecture them on why amnesty would help them in this election just as Schumer likes to preach to Republicans how open borders is in their best interest.
oops , Obama throws Obama Illegals under the bus for now
My guess is, it will be November before they get around to it.
You can apply that mentality to any number of policies; homosexual marriage, abortion, the debt, the budget, illegal immigration, .....
OH-NOEZ PING
I guess their internal polling is showing what other polls have shown.
Why should Obama announce it formally when he’s already granted Amnesty in a defacto fashion?
“I guess their internal polling is showing what other polls have shown.”
Exactly. Polls continually show that the clear majority of both Republicans and Independents oppose amnesty and want the border secure. Even a majority or close to a majority of Dims are against amnesty following the recent open door for “minors”.
Immigration should be a winning issue for Republicans, but the idiots in the Republican “leadership” (I use that term very loosely) won’t touch it. And then they wonder why they’re not up more in campaign polling given that Obummer’s popularity is so low you need a microscope to see it.
Don’t trust the guy one bit. Don’t trust anything coming out of these guys (WH Jarrett gang). Period.
Anybody with two brain cells to rub together knows this.

Mid November....
Right around thanksgiving....
Yes. November - perhaps the second week of November...
“Dont trust the guy one bit. Dont trust anything coming out of these guys (WH Jarrett gang). Period. Anybody with two brain cells to rub together knows this.”
I suppose this could be disinformation, and JugEars may go ahead and sprinkle his amnesty fairy dust before the elections. However, that could be the ultimate stake in the heart for Senate candidates in Louisiana, Arkansas, Georgia, and elsewhere.
And remember that postponing hated laws until after elections has been SOP for this administration when it comes to ObummerCare. So there is precedent for this with these jerks.
You should know this ahole by now and the way he works it.
“Immigration should be a winning issue for Republicans, but the idiots in the Republican leadership (I use that term very loosely) wont touch it. “
Exactly right but the Chamber of Amnesty has been really spreading the cash around to the GOPe.
A clear example of the party working against their constituents in the middle class.
Made to order for after the election. It’s going to be an extremely educational lame duck session for the Republican constituency.
“Made to order for after the election. Its going to be an extremely educational lame duck session for the Republican constituency.”
Good point. We know that JugEars won’t feel any restraint after the midterms in Nov. on using executive order amnesties.
And if that’s not enough to worry about, what will the lame duck House Republicans inflict on us? Will they open up legislative amnesty by either passing the Senate Rubio/Schumer amnesty bill, or come up with their own “conservative” solution, which will take it to a Senate/House conference in which we get Rubio/Schumer lite?
The Democrats ARE better than the Republicans.
You can’t really deny it.
When it comes to traitors, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama are hands down the very best in our nation’s history.
The only question is, Carter to Obama is a pretty impressive progression, how do you keep that going?
I wouldn’t worry too much about the House Republicans caving on Amnesty after the election. They saw Cantor get his head handed to him in June and it will take YEARS for them to forget it happened, regardless of how hard their “advisers” (most of them gay, by the way) try to make them forget.
The recent (lack of) movement on the issue by the president is also telling them that they have been DECEIVED all along and that the country NEVER wanted Amnesty, or the president would have already issued his Executive Orders. Overall, I think they “get it” now - the BIG QUESTION left is whether they will jettison those “advisers” (most of them gay, by the way) and start listening to the people that actually ELECTED them to office.
