VATICAN CITY (AP) Pope Francis has sought to encourage Iraq's beleaguered Christians under threat from Islamic militants, saying they are the "heart" of the church and that the church is proud of them.
In comments translated into Arabic during his weekly Wednesday general audience, Francis said the Catholic Church is like a mother, and like any mother will "defend her defenseless and persecuted children." Francis has said it was legitimate to use force to stop the militants..."The church suffers with you and is proud of you."

His has become one of the few voices insisting on the plight of Iraqi Christians being front page in the media.
Thank-you for making my day with that post. God Bless.
When J. M. Bergoglio talks, people listen.
Here’s a thought, hour Holiness. How’s about calling for a Crusade?!?
Indeed, where’s the spirit of Pope Urban II??
But the question I have is what took him so long.
Since he became Pope the persecution of Christians worldwide has increased dramatically.
Why didn't he speak out against the Muslim Brotherhood when they were murdering Christians. Why didn't he speak out against the Syrian rebels. Why didn't he speak out about Boku Haram and Muslims in Africa slaughtering Catholics. Why did he not speak out about the situation in the Philippines where Muslims are attacking Catholics.
The is a good, if late, start. I hope he continues.
He has spoken out on a number of occasions, and when it got even worse he called for military intervention.
I don’t recall any other world religious leader doing the same.
FWIW, I am an ordained METHODIST minister...not Catholic.
“He has spoken out on a number of occasions, and when it got even worse he called for military intervention.
I dont recall any other world religious leader doing the same.”
I agree he has done more than any other religious leader.
I just wish he had begun earlier to speak out and rally people against the murder and persecution against Catholics throughout the world.
He might have saved some lives. And saved some people from being tortured. And saved some women from being kidnapped and sold into slavery.
He’s only been pope for a 15 months.
The case would be against Benedict more than against this Pope.
IMO just about the bravest people on earth today are the Christians of the Middle East.
“The case would be against Benedict more than against this Pope.”
Benedict spoke out forcefully when he was Pope.
>> I dont recall any other world religious leader doing the same.
Neither do I.
Thanks for posting.
I guess I just don’t recall it.
