Racy yearbook photo raises controversy

Best smile, most likely to succeed and most likely to skinny dip? A category in a high school yearbook is raising some eyebrows, but it’s the photo that goes along with it that is really stirring up controversy.

“It was kind of tasteless,” said Portales High School Senior Emilee Haman.

Another student called the photo inappropriate.

To the credit of the administration, they are supporting the parents who think the "skinny dipping" stuff was detrimental.

Where was the adult in charge of the yearbook staff?
In my high-school the teacher in charge of that project would NEVER have let such a thing see the light of day for publication.

“They were trying to be cute, trying to be humorous to a certain extent and it didn’t go over well with a certain fraction who saw the yearbook,” said Portales High School Assistant Principal Garrick Matthews.

This is what you get when the faculty thinks they are so “with it” that they refer to Parent-Teacher Conferences as meetings with Ward & June. (”Leave it to Beaver” reference.)

I was photographer for the school newspaper in 1971. The big deal then was girls wearing jeans to school so I took a picture of one of the girls in school wearing jeans from the neck down. She happened to be the most busty HWP girl in school as well.

When the picture showed up in the paper, the top was cut off just below her breasts. I was bummed. ;-)

We had pics of students streaking in our HS year book and nobody thought anything of it. Forty years later they are making a commotion about those pics?

The student photographer for our school yearbook ran around the school and snapped shots of about two dozen of the shapeliest female backsides in jeans.

He put them into a montage which he entitled “Rear of the Year”

It was one of the many items our faculty mentor vetoed.
