Since June, I have been fascinated (and repelled) by some of the sunshine that was being blown up America's collective azz by the NYT.

It’s not just the NYT: it’s FDR, Churchill, Ike, etc., etc. Everyone is on a victory high that’s going to go into a tailspin this week, as Market Garden turns into a debacle, and crash and burn in December.

Yes, even Hanson Baldwin is on the end of the war is just around the corner bandwagon. Market-Garden will throw an ice bath on that.

People should notice that resistance is stiffening and not just because of the logistics problems. The forts around Metz are occupied. Metz is in territory the Germans regard as German. It has been going back and forth since the Middle Ages, but from 1871 to 1919 it was in the German Empire and Hitler made it part of Germany again. So, the Germans are now fighting for home and hearth and naturally will stiffen along a much shorter front.
