Iraqs prime minister says his countrys intelligence operation has uncovered a plot for an attack on subway systems in the United States and Paris.
Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said he was told of the plot by Baghdad, and that it was the work of foreign fighters of the Islamic State group in Iraq. Al-Abadis assertion could not be independently confirmed.
Asked if the attacks were imminent, he said, Im not sure. Asked if the attacks had been thwarted, he said, No. Al-Abadi said the United States had been alerted, and that the suspects included extremists from the United States and France who were fighting for the Islamic State group in Iraq.
Today, while Im here Im receiving accurate reports from Baghdad that there were arrests of a few elements and there were networks from inside Iraq to have attacks on metros of Paris and U.S., al-Abadi said, speaking in English. They are not Iraqis. Some of them are French, some of them are Americans. But they are in Iraq.
He made the remarks at a meeting with journalists on the sidelines of a gathering of world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly.
Congressman Peter King, member of the Homeland Security Commission, told CBS 2 that he has not seen evidence of an imminent threat against the United States.
I have been aware that there are plots that ISIS is planning overseas against other countries, quite honestly, I have not been advised of this and I have been checking this out I dont believe that the U.S. government has been advised of an imminent plot, King said.
It could be speculation in Iraq, it could be conversations where they were talking about it as aspirational, but as far as it being in motion I dont believe it is, King added.
King said the nation must be on guard, but so far, the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies have not put out any advisories of an imminent threat against the U.S.
If they thought it was imminent they would be contacting New York State, New York City as soon as possible because when youre talking about a subway attack obviously New York is always what first comes to mind, King said. We have at least 5,000 entrances and exits to train stations in New York, millions of commuters everyday, millions of riders on the trains, so they would be first notified.
The NYPD released a statement saying, We are aware of the Iraqi Prime Ministers statements and we are in close contact with the FBI and other federal partners as we assess this particular threat stream. New York City normally operates at a heightened level of security and we adjust that posture daily based on our evaluation of information as we receive it.
A spokesperson for Mayor Bill de Blasios office released a statement saying that the city takes any threat seriously.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said his administration is treating the situation with the utmost precaution.
Our administration has been coordinating at a high level with local, state and federal partners. I want to assure the people of New York that we are monitoring these reports closely and are in close communication with officials in Washington, Cuomo stated. Public safety is paramount, and we are doing everything necessary to protect New Yorkers.
The news comes a day after the governors of New York and New Jersey came together to announce a substantial increase in security at local bridges, tunnels, airports and mass transit hubs, including Penn Station and Grand Central Station.
Cuomo and Gov. Chris Christie said the ramped up security was not a result of any particular new intelligence.
It is unclear if that increase in security is related to the announcement made by Al-Abadi Thursday, CBS 2s Andrea Grymes reported.
The Islamic State extremists blitz in Iraq and Syria prompted the United State to launch airstrikes in Iraq last month, to aid Kurdish forces who were battling the militants and to protect religious minorities.
In addition to the brutality Islamic State has visited on the people in Iraq and Syria, western leaders have voiced concern that the group would move its terror operations outside the region.
This week, the U.S. and five allied Arab states expanded the aerial campaign into Syria, where the militant group is battling President Bashar Assads forces as well as Western-backed rebels.
It's just a matter of time...
Well, I guess I’m walking.
So send mo' money to me now to stop it.
the attack on the Tokyo subway system was because the confined air space highmy guess is that such attacks would likely involve some kind of agent like Sharon or mustard gas or chlorine gas that is just a blind guy howeverly concentrates and makes more effective most airborne chemical agents.
the attack only killed four but it sent to the hospital over 10,000 people.
Sorry — wrath of voice recognition, ugh...
My heart goes out to Americans who need public transportation.
They’re sitting ducks.
I used to take the Rapid Transit (aka The Rappie) when I lived in Cleveland.
Thank God now I live on a farm in the middle of nowhere.
French people walk and bike around the countryside, eating good food and wine, and acting snarky towards the new societies so bourgeois.
Islam households sit around and talk about killing non-believers and blowing $hit up.
If Iraqi security forces acted on every plan to blow up America's subways hatched in Iraq, nobody there would have a social life. It's what they talk about when playing cards or singing their toddlers to sleep.
I recently saw a program about that attack on TV.
What a horrifying mess.
MY GOD, THEY'VE RECRUITED SHARON, AS AN AGENT???
Is that the result of actionable intelligence or just a basic instinct?
Real Name Sharon Carter. Aliases Agent 13
I wonder what they talk about in The islamic State of Michigan?
Horor killing lists of slutty daughters?
600 count Egyptian cotton bedsheets tailored to outerwear?
Poisoning christian's dogs with antifreeze soaked meat?
Just a few Dearborne social topics.
I’m sure Sharon’s comfort zone harbors a plethora of hazardous waste that can be used in the manufacture of biological weaponry.
Horror = Honor, but it still works either way.
If they poisoned my dogs, I’d hunt them down and show them what torture is.
Anyone who doesn’t like dogs has a hard heart. Believe me, I know. My mother-in-law hated dogs.
The truth is that we have a Federal Government that refuses to take even the most minimal steps to protect our borders. They give free services to burglars that break in to the country all tax payer funded. All the while they torment the legal citizens with regulations, fees and taxes.
We are all sitting ducks.
We seriously need to get a handle on illegal immigration.
Goodness only knows how many ISIS killers are here now...who posed as simple farm workers to sneak into the country?
I’m in the same camp. I love dogs, cats, horses and most animals in general. Someone harms my Terra, the law had best get to them first.
I’d be willing to do time.
