New Gwen Graham ad blasts Steve Southerland’s role in federal shutdown

Democratic congressional candidate Gwen Graham released a new ad on Thursday bashing opponent Steve Southerland for his role in both last October’s federal government shutdown and the vote to re-open it.

In “Fresh,” the latest 30-second spot, Graham says the Panama City Republican’s vote against re-opening came even as the GOP and Democrats were coming together to find a solution.

“Believe me, I can handle Congressman Southerland’s campaign of lies and put-downs,” she says in the ad. “But his vote for the government shutdown? Now, that’s a problem.”

Graham points out that the shutdown was a clear example of how Southerland’s “Washington Way” is “totally out-of-touch with North Florida’s values.” The sixteen-day closure of the federal government hurt seniors, veterans, businesses and families, she adds, costing the economy $24 billion dollars.

“When both parties finally got together to fix it, Congressman Southerland voted to keep the shutdown going,” the ad concludes. “That’s just one reason we need a fresh start.”

Graham and Southerland are facing off in the hotly contested Florida’s 2nd Congressional District, which includes Tallahassee, Panama City and the eastern part of the Florida Panhandle.

“Fresh” is now available on YouTube.
