The French Foreign Legion works (mostly) because they can get away with levels of discipline that would be abhorrent and unacceptable in the US military. Even then, they pledge their loyalty to the Legion, and not to France ('Legio Patria Nostra').

This will not work in the US military without a 'fundamental transformation.' Certainly, there will be a small percentage of these recruits who truly value and desire American citizenship and are willing to serve to earn it. I suspect that will not be the case with the majority.
