This is an issue for one and only one reason. The conservative wing(s) of the party have not yet united behind a candidate, and -- if and when that happens -- we have yet to see if the conservative standardbearer du jour can (a) get traction with the broader public and (b) avoid self-destruction.

At the moment, Romney stands out because he's tested, vetted, capable, polished, and highly impressive personally. He would be a great Republican candidate were he a couple of shades more conservative. But he is who is is. The Romney buzz will dissipate when and if a strong conservative with outreach potential appears on the scene. If that doesn't happen by the middle of next year, Romney may have appeal as the best man standing. That's a low bar. But it remains to be seen who will clear it.

I agree and if he does manage to get the nomination I will support him. I don’t need my candidate to be perfect. We can achieve our goals taking small bites at the apple.
