Monday may have been Calhoun County Deputy John Scheetzs birthday, but he was the one who gave a special gift to someone else.
The deputy was called out to Four Mile Creek Park Monday morning after a work crew doing maintenance at the site found someone sleeping on a picnic table.
The 56-year-old man, whose name was Michael, arrived in Florida earlier this year with some other homeless people to escape the cold. At one point, he was staying in a homeless shelter in Panama City, and since that time, wound up in Calhoun County, where he had been getting some help from the folks at Hillcrest Baptist Church.
He told the deputy he was staying at the park while waiting on a check to arrive that had been forwarded to him in care of the church.
The two men talked for a few minutes. Then the deputy asked about Michaels family.
Michael, who is from Colorado, told him he hadnt seen his family in 20 years and didnt even know if his mother was still living. He explained that he understood she had moved some years ago but wasnt sure about the name of the town.
Even if he had known where she lived, he said he didnt have a cell phone to contact her and didnt know how to use a computer to attempt to search for her.
Whats her name? Scheetz asked. Once he got her full name, he contacted directory assistance and asked for any listings under her name.... [Snip - read the rest here http://www.cljnews.com/20141003deputy-reunites-mother-son-on-the-phone-after-20-years-apart]

Thanks for posting this!
It was a day brightener!
In Topeka, we used to have a self proclaimed homeless advocate, whose goal was to get homeless people to call home.
Its a long story, but sometimes he could be very pushy. And, he would destroy homeless camp sites in the woods to, in his eyes, force the homeless people to call home.
Eventually, a group of 3 or 4 homeless people murdered him in a terribly cruel manner.
Doesn’t sound like this cop was like that. I put myself in the place of the mother and say, “There but for the grace of God go I.”
All cops are craven monsters alert...
Just sayin’...
Thanks for the report. That was a good one.
There are plenty of excellent police officers out there. You just very seldom see their good works focused on in a newspaper or on television.
These are alms and are given as to the Lord. The Lord see’s and knows the officers heart and will bless him. You sometimes even entertain angels without knowing it, I have.
Indeed. So have I.
I agree...it just made me remember that.....and hope that people who read the story don’t run out thrust phones at homeless people. Not all homeless people want to be ‘found’.
Most of the time there’s an extremely good reason why “homeless” men are estranged from families. They have used up the good will of and generally pissed off everyone who has tried to ever help them.
Flame on, fairy tale believers!
