Rounds backtracks on conflicting statement by amending his testimony

Former Gov. Mike Rounds has acknowledged he made an inaccurate statement in written testimony he sent to lawmakers last week, and now he wants to change that testimony.

Rounds sent a letter Thursday to state Sen. Larry Tidemann, R-Brookings, the chairman of the Legislature’s Operations and Audit Committee. In the letter, Rounds seeks permission to amend one of his earlier written responses to the committee’s questions about state involvement in the federal EB-5 immigrant-investor program.

In the answers Rounds sent to legislators last week, he wrote that “the governor’s office was not served” with papers regarding an EB-5 related lawsuit against the state.

On Thursday, the Rapid City Journal reported that Rounds’ office had in fact been served with EB-5 litigation papers in July 2009, according to a document given to the Journal on Wednesday by a tipster on condition of anonymity.

Following publication of the Journal article, Rounds sent a letter to Tidemann seeking to amend the earlier written response. Campaign staffers for Rounds — a Republican who is in a tight four-person race for an open U.S. Senate seat — shared the letter with the Journal on Thursday.

I’ve been wondering for a long time why Mike Rounds hasn’t been able to put this race away. This explains a lot. Wouldn’t it be ironic if Republicans unseated a number of Democrat Senators but didn’t win the chamber due to the defeats of Rounds and Pat Roberts?

I still think Rounds will win this, but there’s a good chance he’ll be a one-term Senator, whether he chooses to be or not.

Why is the Republican legislature demanding testimony of Rounds during this election, are they retarded? Investigate this thing next year.
