Uganda confirms Marburg hemorrhagic fever, which manifests like Ebola, killed a health worker

KAMPALA, Uganda - A Ugandan health worker recently died of Marburg, a highly infectious disease that manifests as a viral hemorrhagic fever, Uganda's Ministry of Health confirmed Monday as health workers moved to quarantine a total of 80 people who had been in contact with the victim.

Further tests Monday would prove whether another man who appeared to be having a hemorrhagic fever actually has Marburg, which belongs in the same family as the dreaded Ebola virus, said Dr. Issa Makumbi, an epidemiologist with Uganda's Ministry of Health....

Marburg (of the Filoviridae family of viruses, as is Ebola) is described as HIGHLY infectious in this article .... so this is the ‘big leagues’, unlike Ebola which is just so darn jayvee and hard to catch .... ??? Let the lies begin ... again. /major sarc

Marburg virus is transmitted via contaminated body fluids. Direct and indirect contact, and droplet transmission are the primary specific routes of viral spread between humans, and between other animals and humans. Health care settings and subsistence hunting define the two primary paradigms for human infection, and therefore both human to human and zoonotic transmission are viable and important routes of human infection. I was getting on a plane once in the UK (Gatwick) with a bunch of missionaries who had just left Uganda right during an Ebola outbreak. I knew this because I had been following it on FR for the weeks prior. (this was in 2001, I believe)

One guy was sweating, could barely stand--massively ill. I knew there was a ton of crap one could get in Africa but it wasn't helping my state of being that I knew about the Ebola outbreak and I heard them saying they had been right in the country where I knew it was going on.

It's a big airport, and I said, "eh, what are the chances they are getting on my plane"

About four hours into the flight the stewardess gets in the microphone and asks if there are any doctors on board, that they had an extremely ill passenger.

I looked around, didn't see them and, again, said, "Eh, what are the chances?"

Eight hours later, we start getting off the plane and there goes Uganda mission boy on a stretcher.

Thankfully, I have as short attention span and forgot about it about a day later.
