How can you tell when Thomas Friedman has given up and stopped bothering? Is there even a way to tell when a man who tried to turn global flattening into a thing has just given up?
Friedman just wrote an article half of which consists of Batman quotes. The rest is his usual mix of random drivel, references to Fukuyama and staged wisdom.
Its why Orit Perlov, an Israeli expert on Arab social networks, keeps telling me that since I cant visit the Islamic State, which is known as ISIS, and interview its leaders, the next best thing would be to see Batman: The Dark Knight.
No you can’t understand ISIS by watching a Batman movie. You might do a better job by reading the Koran.
Liberals are compulsively working themselves into a lather by missing the point. Should we understand ISIS through the lens of Islam? No let’s go watch a comic book movie from 2008 and see if it can help us make sense of this.
Their barbarism comes from a dark place, where radical Islam gives a sense of community to humiliated, drifting young men, who have never held a job or a girls hand.
Come on Tom, you can do better than this.
ISIS is drawing educated Muslims from Europe. Jihadists are often members of the middle and upper classes. It’s also drawing young Muslim women from Europe and the US.
The model that Thomas Friedman offers assumes that ISIS represents a barbarism that is the opposite of order. In fact its appeal and the appeal of totalitarians, right back to Mohammed, is that they offer a sense of order based on barbarism.
Working with every local source of order, as he suggests, would get us into bed with everyone from Al Qaeda to the Muslim Brotherhood. And despite killing some space by dumping a lot of Batman quotes in, he doesn’t seem to understand the meaning of the quote he builds his rambling article around.
Bruce Wayne: The bandit, in the forest in Burma, did you catch him?
Alfred Pennyworth: Yes.
Bruce Wayne: How?
Alfred Pennyworth: We burned the forest down.
Thomas Friedman: “We cant just burn down Syria or Iraq or Nigeria.”
Actually we can. We choose not to, but they’re being burned down anyway. But you don’t need to burn down a country. You do need to be willing to inflict larger scale WW2 level damage.
But what’s the use. Tomorrow Thomas Friedman will just roll out a column about Israel built around a quote from Chinatown.
Religious people of any belief system have to answer the question; what do I gain if I am a worldly success but lose my eternal salvation.
This forces them to kiss the ass of their supreme being to save their asses after death.
Unfortunately for us non- Muslims not prone to converting to Islam, killing us is what their God wants.
Read the Koran and Hadiths. -Tom
Is that a tennis court or a swimming pool??
For a second there I thought thus was about that CDC director Thomas Friedtart.
Now just a cotton pickin’ minit here. Let’s be fair. Tom read the English translation of the Qoran with all the incriminating quotes deleted. He read the Hadiths on the labels of Uncle Mahmoud’s Marvelous Tahina jars, likewise translated into English, and he has several Islamic friends who are really nice guys every time he sees them, and only one of them is doing time for decapitating his wife. So he does too know all about Islam, or as close to it as makes no difference. So there, you racist, you.
With a name like that, he ought to be a comedian.
His babbling sounds more like a clown.
Isn’t there a clearer picture of him? I can barely see Mr. Friedman behind his typewriter and stacks of papers to be fact-checked. It’s a tough job, this journalism.
I have to disagree on a point. Sometimes wisdom can be found in unlikely places. And that movie had one of the wisest quotes of them all. The problem is we refuse to accept that wisdom.
Some people really do want to watch the world burn. And the sooner we accept that, the sooner we ‘understand’.
But it’s not Muslims per se that want to watch it burn. They want to see their Utopia under Allah. It’s Liberals who run from crisis to crisis inflaming tensions and doing exactly the wrong thing exactly all the time in order to foment ignition.
Shilling pays well!
He married into a billionaire family.
He’s got to be one of the most stupid person to roam the earth.
