If the 2nd amendment means gun ownership is a right, how is requiring background checks and ID consistent with recent court rulings regarding voting rights?

The Constitution says whatever five out of nine Supreme Court Justices say it says.

Currently, five out of nine Justices say that the 2nd Amendment is an individual right. Of the five, Scalia and Kennedy will both turn 80 in 2016. Thomas will turn 70 in 2018. The next President is almost certain to get to replace at least one of these three, probably two, maybe all three.

If Hillary or any other Democrat gets to replace any one of these three, then the 2nd Amendment will be found to protect nothing and gun control will become the law of the land, just like freedom from religion, abortion, sodomy and homosexual marriage were all discovered by the Supreme Court to be constitutional rights.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Actually, the Constitution says whatever Justice Kennedy (as the “swing” justice) decides it says, since his vote generally carries the day - Kennedy is America’s omnipotent king. But you’re right about the peril remaining with the aging constitutionalists. I guess the doctrine of “stare decisis” is only applicable when a leftist decision is the one being referred to.
