I know on TV shows, the cops always withhold fire very carefully. On TV, the cops never act too early and cause things to get out of hand. Often, on TV, a police sniper will take out the bad guy while he holds a gun to the head of his intended victim.

In real life? A hail of bullets can take down both the bad guy and his intended victim in the same instant. Which is embarrassing. Unless the story ends up being told just right.

Police fire is not to be considered automatically as “friendly fire.” It could be.

One of Murphy’s Rules of Combat Ops is that the only thing more accurate than incoming enemy fire is incoming friendly fire.
