EL SALVADOR (CBS SF) An earthquake registering a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 struck off the coast of El Salvador Monday evening near La Union, according to the U.S. Geological Surveys automated seismograph alert network.
The quake struck at an estimated depth of 70 KM below the earths surface. Deeper quakes are less noticeable while a shallow quakein the 0 to 40 mile depth rangecan feel much stronger than their actual reported magnitude. Quakes just below the earths surface, in the 0 to 10 miles range, can cause even more damage at lower magnitudes.
No tsunami threat was expected.

Yep, that’s a biggie. When one that size hits you are off to buy new dishes and putting your refrigerator back in the upright position. That is if your single story house did not turn into a split level and you can still live in it.
Anyone else notice how lame the USGS website is since the changed it. Used to be able to see the quake and all details as soon as you opened the page.
