Suppose you could take an old engine concept discarded in the 1970s

It wasn't discarded in the 70's, it was stomped out by government bureaucrats. Namely, the EPA.

I still use one of those early Detroit Diesels, the 71 series, which you could buy from 1 cyclinder up to 16 cylinders depending on the power needs. It's a real fuel miser.

I'm not understanding the reasoning behind this engine being vertical but canted to one side as opposed to just laying it flat for a horizontally opposed design a la Subaru, Porsche and others. The center of gravity is considerably lower for handling and safety advantages, the space is there side to side between the front suspension and it offers packaging flexibility as far as vehicle configuration, styling and aerodynamics.

2-stroke are indeed inherently more efficient than 4-stroke engines.

The opposed piston concept is a proven winner

Thanks for posting this article.

Now... scale the engine down, and use it in a hybrid to generate electricity.

Don’t get your hopes up. If they don’t have their suction in the right pit and haven not paid the right people the feds will figure out a reason to kill if. If they have done those things no matter how sorry it is we’ll get it shoved down our throats .... if we live that long.

In my personal experience, diesels seem to have sweet spots. My F250 can get a 10% increase in fuel economy just by keeping it at 2000 RPMas much as possible.

Based on that observation, it seems that a diesel-electric series hybrid would be the most efficient configuration. Series meaning electric only drive with a small battery or super capacitor bank for acceleration demand, with a fixed RPM diesel generator providing recharge and sustain power.
