This is not an overt, us-versus-them situation in either the Kentucky Senate contest or the Texas governors race. But the press has these Democratic candidates on the defensive, and they in turn are doubling down on big blunders.
Candidates who stumble, as Grimes and Davis have in the last week, face a stark choice. They can admit their mistake, make some expression of regret and move onor they can keep digging the hole deeper. The problem with refusing to move on is that the media keep hammering away at the original mistake and the pundits pile on, turning a one- or two-day flap into a weeklong embarrassment.
Grimes misstep, in her race against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, was hardly the result of a gotcha question. The Louisville Courier Journal editorial board wanted to know whether she voted for Barack Obama, and Grimes repeatedly refused to say. She stuck to that stance during a debate with McConnell this week. This was a self-inflicted wound, notwithstanding her lofty rhetoric about the sanctity of the ballot box. Grimes is desperate to avoid being tied to Obama.
The media pile on......NBCs Chuck Todd got it all going by claiming she had disqualified herself, which the McConnell camp promptly put in an ad, which generated more coverage of how devastating this was for Grimes, which then primed news outlets to grant outsized attention to this question when it was posed again.
The national media, which lionized Wendy Davis when she mounted that abortion-rights filibuster, have really savaged her over the attack ad against Greg Abbott. Here, too, Davis is refusing to accept the media verdict and insisting she was right to use a wheelchair image in an ad against an opponent who cant walk.

Since they are both digging, buy them a backhoe.
Davis is a disgrace....but only 10 points behind
Davis is a disgrace and despicable. Career, climbing the ladder at all costs appear to be her main concern. On a personal note, her voice grates on me big time and I only have heard clips. I am thankful the Texas legislature didn’t cave in when she filibustered just to not have to hear her droning on an on. She speaks in a monotone, measured, nasally, drawn out way that sounds so un-natural. I think she is trying NOT to sound like a Texan. Instead she sounds like a character on a cartoon.
There is a solid base that will vote for anything labeled “Democrat” today.
Also keep in mind all those women who have already murdered or who might want to murder their babies desperately want affirmation of their acts.
This is just a show... a reward to McConnell from the Rats for doing such great work against Conservatives. McConnell was never in any danger of being defeated. Having the minority or possibly majority leader in your pocket is more valuable than this woman defeating him.
If Davis spoke any slower, she could take a nap for every 100 words coming out of her mouth.
