Menino took office in 1993 barely formed as a political actor, and fit easily into the post-Sixties Democratic Party. He had little trouble with the affluent liberal yuppie, gay, and feminist blocs that earlier ethnic Democrats had struggled with, and he managed that without losing Irish or Italian or African-American support. Menino was a symbol of how much Democratic politicians, especially big city White ethnic Catholic Democrat politicians had changed in just ten or fifteen years.
A generation earlier, Menino, who didn't have much education and struggled with the English language would have been hated by ambitious young progressive types, as Daley or Rizzo or Yorty was, but Menino got along well with upscale liberals. In fact, he never really faced serious opposition from anybody. He was a hard guy to hate, even if you disagreed with him about almost everything. Dumb as a fox, you could say.

Pro-abortion.
Will Cardinal Sean be conducting the funeral, slobbering all over the throng of pro-abortion Catholic politicians?
Only if he doesn’t have two broken legs and pneumonia.
Somewhere in Hell some poor admission bureaucrat is suffering the horrors of Menino’s mumbling speech.
