Healing community and new policies can curb gun violence
Milwaukee J-S ^ | 09 nov 2014

Experts on gun violence met at a symposium Friday afternoon in Milwaukee as another Milwaukee family mourned the death of a child hit by a stray bullet Thursday night.

Laylah C. Petersen — remember her name — was sitting on her grandfather's lap when she was hit. She was 5. Sierra Guyton — remember her name, too — was killed while playing on her school playground last May. She was 10. In Racine, a 4-year-old girl was shot the day before Petersen was shot.

Our hearts reach out to Petersen's family and echo the words of Laylah's aunt, Jocelyn Petersen: "She was somebody's granddaughter, she was a niece, she was like an angel and now she's real life angel, but it was too soon. ...We need justice for Laylah." And for all these children.

This is not just a police issue, although more police will help, which is why Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett is providing more officers in his next budget.

It is not just a guns issue, although background checks and making sure those with violent histories can't legally walk around with firearms also will help.

Which is why Police Chief Edward Flynn will again ask the Legislature to enact measures to help stop criminals from getting their hands on guns, a plea we hope legislators will finally pay attention to.

I suppose the measures would likely stymie law-abiding citizens while not causing the slightest blip for those who do such shootings.

If doctors followed such plans as most that attempt to "stem illegal gun use", they would just euthanize the person to "solve" the problem of the bad gall bladder or ingrown toenail.

Interesting crime site on Baltimore homicides. Out of a list the last hundred persons/victims (only five months) all are Black with the exception of only eight being identified as White or Hispanic. Two are listed as being “unknown”.

I wonder if Chief Flynn has considered asking the Legislature to enact measures prohibiting shooting people?

More empty talk. More gun laws that not only don’t stop violent crime, but also leave more people defenseless.

The reason violent criminals continue to brutalize people is that our system of justice (what a joke) will not jail/execute them. Jail is a revolving door at a resort. Executions are rare, taking so long as to give no justice to the victims.

Anyone threatening violence in the commission of a crime should be jailed for life with no possibility of parole. Jail will mean 12 hours per day, six days a week of manual labor.

Anyone who harms/kills someone in the commission of a crime should be executed, post haste.

By removing these thugs from society permanently, not only are the people safer, but these thugs will not be breeding any more of their ilk. They will not be honing their evil skills behind bars to be used after a mere 3 to 5 years. They will not be planning their revenge on society because they are unfit to reenter society, ever.

Would be thugs will see their mentors jailed & executed. The thugs go away & never come back. Nothing to envy/emulate there.

Our current system is designed & implemented to enrich the lawyers who control the system. Obviously guilty criminals are allowed to go free on technicalities, or get reduced sentences by plea bargaining. Short sentences for violent criminals ensures they will be back to crime in a few months. Murderers on death row file endless appeals. In all these things the lawyers are the only winners, while society pays a heavy price.

Violent criminals are PREDATORS. Predators should be eliminated immediately to ensure the safety of all. Our justice system is flawed. It needs fixing.

Yep - he’s a political appointee/lapdog whose primary duty is to do the bidding of a big-city democrat mayor.

That is especially true for youthful offenders in Milwaukee. The system is a joke and they know it.

How does one become an expert on gun violence? Is there a class I can take?

When you take the class can you ask them why “Gun Violence” is so much worse than “Knife Violence” or just plain old “Violence”.

When your dead you are dead. It doesn’t matter what tool was used to do you in.

Liberals always try to change the language. They want to make sure that the word “Guns” are linked with the word “Violence”.

It allows for no legitimate use of Guns.

--several years ago, before the Wisconsin concealed carry law, it had been clearly established that in most circumstances , "open carry" was legal.

--the distinguished Chief Flynn opined that if anyone did it in his jurisdiction , they would be "thrown down on the sidewalk" by his officers--

What’s needed is more firearms in the hands of and being carried by law abiding citizens. And for our justice system to mete out justice to those who cannot live in a civilized society. Prisons are not for punishment or rehabilatation, they are to protect us who can and isolate those who have proven they cannot live in a civilized society.
