Russia's Demography Continues To Improve

Russia is desperately short of good news at the moment. Inflation is substantially above target, the economy is stuck in neutral, the price of oil has dropped sharply (likely throwing the Russian budget into deficit), and the ruble has been probing new lows against both the US Dollar and Euro on a daily basis. The opposition has been scattered to the wind, and barely a week passes without the authorities concocting some kind of terrible plan (the latest: banning lots of school textbooks). Even among analysts that are usually a bit more optimistic about Russia, it is impossible to miss a generalized sense of doom and despair.

There is at least one area, though, in which the news coming out of Russia remains fairly upbeat: demography. Rosstat just released its latest batch of population figures, and although there haven’t been any dramatic changes the modestly positive trends of the past several years have continued unabated. Based on the results of the first nine months of the year, Russia is on course to record a natural population growth rate of about 0.5 per 1,000 in 2014, its best since 1991.

They are the only first world country that is proactively fighting its demographic death. Something to be impressed about.

So are we, but our method is to open the gates. The question here is not really immigration, though that is what everyone calls it; the question is assimilation.

Shouldn’t we view statistics generated from places like Russia and China with at least as much skepticism as we view statistics generated by the federal gov’t?

Estimates vary on how Islamic Russia is, it might be as high as 18% Muslim.

When their economy collapses because of low oil prices, corruption, and sanctions, then the baby factories will shut down pretty quickly.

My first thought as well. Are these cultural Christians or Moslems?

2 million Russian Crimeans also helped improve the demographic picture.

Its not just about real estate and with only 150 million people, outside of European Russia, the country is empty.

Outside of North Caucasus which is a home to less than 2 million people these ‘Muslims’ are mostly Christians or atheists. There are some Muslim agitation in Tatarstan and Bashkortostan but if you think it works well, count US black population as Muslim too, which is about as wrong.
