Obama: Immigration Fight Can't Be "Dealbreaker"

JAKE MILLER November 22, 2014 Obama: Immigration Fight Can't Be "Dealbreaker"

In the face of fierce Republican blowback, President Obama continued defending his recent executive action on immigration in his weekly address Saturday, warning Republicans not to paralyze the government simply because they object to one part of his agenda.

"We can't allow a disagreement over a single issue to be a dealbreaker on every issue," Mr. Obama said in the address, which was taped Friday during the president's trip to Las Vegas. "That's not how our democracy works. This debate deserves more than politics as usual."

Conservatives have accused the president of grossly overstepping the bounds of his authority with the action, which will shield roughly 5 million undocumented immigrants living in the country from the threat of deportation and authorize them to live and work legally in the United States for at least three years. Some Republican lawmakers have pushed their leaders to strip funding for new green cards and visas in a spending bill that must pass Congress by mid-December to prevent a government shutdown.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, have lodged stiff objections to Mr. Obama's policy changes, vowing a swift response when the new Congress convenes in January, but they've not yet indicated what actions they will take.

Of course, goading Congress into action on immigration is exactly what the president hoped to accomplish by acting unilaterally.

"As you might have heard, there are members of Congress who question my authority to make our immigration system work better," he said in his address. "Well, I have one answer for that: Pass a bill. The day I sign it into law, the actions I've taken to help solve this problem will no longer be necessary."

The GOPs problem with caving on immigrant is Obama is just testing the waters for more executive actions such as onerous EPA regulation on CO2 emissions and jamming section 8 families into suburbia....and lots more

So better to stop him now

Just because he’s committed one little unconstitutional act should not be a deal breaker.

“one part of his agenda”? The Republicans should be objecting to every part of his agenda. I guess that’s dreaming.

He is not “running roughshod” over Republicans. He and the Republicans are running roughshod over the citizenry. He cannot do any of this without the nonco-operation and plain complicity of the Republicans, at least not this year. Next year he probably doesn’t need Republican help any more.

The Sultan “ripped up the Constitution” and the Republicans are working with him to sweep up. Every dictator needs a show Opposition- even Venezuela keeps one around- until the power is completely his.

his allows Republicans breathing room to work on other issues.

Not breathing room. It allows them to abdicate their responsibilities while collecting their financial rewards.

I know. It is pointless if you don’t trust the GOP to do the right thing.

It was a concern over a single issue - obamacare - last year, that caused obam to shut down the government. Even as the Congress moved relentlessly in his direction, even requesting a delay that he eventually implemented, this clown had a obsession with winning on a single issue and the rest of the government could close up shop. But of course, he knows republican’ts will eventually cave because their leadership is spineless and is afraid of the obama press corpse.

U R correct. Them leaving town made it look like it was no big deal. I don’t think they will even do the simple act of cutting off Obama’s funding. It can be very discouraging.

"Well, I have one answer for that: Pass a bill"

Be it enacted: 90 days from today, any alien within the United States who does not have a permanent resident card, a visa, or whose visa is expired, shall be deported to his place of origin.

In order to implement this legislation in an appropriate time period, the President is directed to use the US Army and Marine Corps to open a rail corridor into Mexico with a point of debarkation at least 200 miles from the nearest US frontier point, and to secure said corridor and point of debarkation using all necessary force. Ten days after the military operation is completed, the Secretary of Transportation is authorized to designate alien collection and marshaling points and to commandeer sufficient law enforcement and rail transportation resources to effect the removal of up to twenty million persons within 90 days.

For the purposes of this legislation, the Posse Comitatus Act shall not apply to individuals not in possession of a birth certificate, baptismal record, or passport sufficient to demonstrate US citizenship. Any individuals who are US citizens by birth and who are over the age of fourteen may choose to remain if other family members are being deported, however, all US citizens whose alien parents are being deported and who are aged thirteen or younger must accompany their parents. They are granted the right to return on or after their fourteenth birthday.

When the removal operation is completed, the US military may withdraw from Mexico, except they will hold a strip of land twenty miles deep on the Mexican side of the frontier and deny movement within said zone to any unauthorized persons.

Thirty days after the removal operation is completed, any person employing a person who is not a US citizen or a US permanent resident shall upon conviction pay a fine of $50 000 per offense and be imprisoned for a term of years not less than ten.

Basically, the arrogant, insolent Obama is saying to the GOP and any critics, “Get over it.”

It’s not the issue per se. It’s the lawlessness.

It is not Lawless when you have legal opinions from the AG, and several other patriotic lawyers, we even have some of those lawyers here on FR.

I said when this guy was a Senator contemplating a run, that if he was elected he would have no intention of leaving. I see nothing in his behavior to date that makes me believe otherwise today.

and I don’t believe January is going to change this.

We all seem to forget that Michele Bachman tried very hard to defund ObamaCare and Boehner chopped her off at the knees. Law of the land, dontcha know.

Oh, it’s illegal and unconstitutional all right. The president has been trying to get the congress to pass his proposed changes to the immigration laws and they have rejected them. So now the president is following through with his earlier threat to dictate and enforce his own laws.

Sorry, but the president may not dictate law, nor may he amend existing law. And he cannot pick and choose which laws he will enforce or ignore.

His disgraceful bullying actions here are immoral, illegal, unconstitutional, lawless and dictatorial. And it’s just the latest in a long chain of Obama’s illegal actions and usurpations.

The congress must take action to curtail Obama’s continuing lawlessness or they’ve allowed him to become a dictator.

I’m not clear at all on what exactly they could do......I’d be happy if they simply arrested the guy ....but we know that won’t happen.

It’s like nothing is sacred at all about our country and it’s become a dumping ground for every third worlder that wants to live in a welfare state, which is what we are becoming....because so much of everything else is going overseas including our best and brightist who no longer understand, or want to, what it is to love and respect your country.

It saddens me greatly.....and this generation is far worse off then lost...they are deceived!

Why can’t the Congress just pass bills now and not even consider at all Obama’s veto as meaning anything at all since Congressional authority means nothing to him? They hold the purse strings....so just do it!
