Officer David Smith died when an enraged perp reached into his police car, got his gun, and shot him

But for his willingness to use deadly force, Darren Wilson might be as dead today as his brother law enforcement officer, David Wilson, of the Johnson City, NY Police. William Jacobson of Legal Insurrection reminds us of the largely forgotten incident in which a peace officer died only a few months prior to the death of Michael Brown, strong arm robber, now being lionized by some as a hero and martyr.

A reader from this area (Johnson City is about 45 minutes from Ithaca) forwarded me the link, writing: “I had forgotten about this event very close to home but it seems to me that it is relevant to current events.”

Police: Johnson City police officer was shot and killed with his own weapon

Jacobson notes:

As recounted in this video, the circumstances were remarkably similar to the initial assault on Darren Wilson by Michael Brown: Sucker punches to an officer seated in his patrol car, with the perpetrator then leaning in to try to steal the weapon:

When an enraged or intoxicated perp (and Brown appears to have been both – see the surveillance video of his thuggery against a store owner half his size) reaches into a police car to grab an officer’s weapon, it often comes down to a question of which of them will be shot. Those who argue Officer Wilson should have sacrificed his own life so that a violent thief could live will never convince me.

But for his willingness to use deadly force, Darren Wilson might be as dead today as his brother law enforcement officer, David Wilson, of the Johnson City, NY Police.

small error in the story. we have no peace officers anymore. they are all law enforcement officers now. those that have in the past, experienced both, know of the tangible difference.

Perhaps Mr. Brown should be charged in abstentia for attempted murder of a police officer.

Isn't that the truth! Today's LEOs are all about control and domination - "peace officer"? What is that???

...yup

... and have all the perjurers chucked into jail, c/w hard time and labor for the damage their lies created.
... and then that step dad “burn the bitch”, the same. Lets add incitement.

And lets not neglect nObama who coached “stay the course”. How presidential!

Look at the damage the chimps did based on mis information that we have to compensate through insurance or more government support.

Better to be tried by 12, than carried by 6.

This has nothing to do with the law, it is being stoked to break down society and promote their Marxist agenda.

Pray America is waking

I think the author has confused the word ‘enraged’ with ‘unarmed.’

I am a duly authorized Peace Officer (actual term is “deputized” in my neck of the woods).

I am authorized to direct traffic and engage in victim searches but only in my municipality and only at the request of a “LEO-in-charge. I have a uniform and am issued a flashlight.

How was Officer Wilson’s self defense about “control and domination” instead of saving his life from a dangerous, violent criminal and protecting the community from the same thug?

Actually in New York, Peace Officer is a thing. And it’s a different thing than a Police Officer. Peace Officers are statutorily covered in a different set of laws than Peace Officers, and they include everyone from Fire Marshals to Constables to Park Rangers to Humane Officers.

Their ability to carry firearms is specifically covered statutorily for each category of Peace Officer, though they can get a permit and carry regardless, though it is New York so good luck with that.

The officer that was killed was not a Peace Officer in NY. He was a Police Officer.

Uh, yeah. Peace Officers are statutorily covered in a different set of laws than Police Officers. Sorry about that.

Just looked it up on Wikipedia and apparently technically some Federal Agents are also considered Peace Officers in New York with limited (state) arrest powers.
