TARRANT, Alabama -- A woman caught shoplifting eggs in Tarrant Saturday didn't leave with handcuffs and a court date. Thanks to a Tarrant police officer, she left with food for her family.

Officer William Stacy was called to the Dollar General on Pinson Valley Parkway when employees caught the woman trying to steal a dozen eggs, Tarrant Police Chief Dennis Reno said.

The woman had her young children in the car. She told Officer Stacy that she was only stealing because she was trying to feed her children.

Stacy talked with Dollar General, and they said they wouldn't prosecute. So Stacy made an offer.

If you show up at our local food pantry, they have an emergency food box to give people.
If she had been arrested and booked, the kids would have gotten fed.

Oh brother! She would have been arrested and her kids taken to Children’s Services, and then the games begin with court appearances, foster homes, police record, etc. All this over a dozen eggs? Wow - are you really this stupid?

I didn’t steal the eggs. She did. Was she that stupid?

I am not against helping people. I enjoy helping people. I know many people need help, and I’m happy to help those in need. I also know that theft is wrong and that poverty doesn’t excuse theft. Tons of poor people go around without stealing. There is no excuse in modern America to go around stealing things for what, a dollar? There is a reason we have churches and charities. How often does she steal, I wonder. Eggs won’t feed her chimerical children for long.

I imagine she was just desperate. Hope you never have to make that decision.

Hey, you’re the one who lives in a town that allows kids to starve, not me.

Our churches feed our poor kids. Your churches turn them away. You said it, not me.

"...most of the time they serve their members first. If there is anything left, they service the community."

If the church accepts donations from the community at large, then all members of the community, regardless of church affiliation should be served.

Ididn’t say they turn them away. I said they have to jump through hoops for the most part. We have a system here in our town where you call and they refer you to different charities for help. However, if you take help once in the month, you can’t usually get help from another one. They keep a list. Now, keep in mind also that many close up shop around 4 or 5 in the afternoon. We don’t know what time this happened when the woman was stealing eggs. There is a lack of information in this article.

I’m so glad that some of you on here have all the answers. Guess we don’t need God after all, since some are all knowing????

This woman is the grandmother of the younger children. I think she was desperate. Sure these folks aren’t perfect, but if you ask yourself ‘what would Jesus do?’, I think the answer would be the same as the officer.

The max SNAP benefits for a family of four is $443. My wife and I spend more than that in a month and we do NOT eat extravagantly.

They have to get money somewhere to buy the “lucies” since the government has taxed them so high most can only afford one fag at a time. “Fag” is what blacks called cigarettes back in the sixties.

A cop helped my wife out when I was overseas. She had ran into a ditch and he got a wrecker driver to pull her out for free. To show her gratitude she gave him a hug.....and some!

I divorced her and got the married cop fired. I was real good friends with the mayor.

Good for you! People who’ve never been in dire straights don’t understand. You can have all kinds of plans but it slips up on you. For all we know this woman “just knew in her heart” that things were going to turn around.

Years ago my wife’s in-laws kidnapped her daughter. The cops wouldn’t do a damned thing about it because the kid had been taken across the state line. My wife was 17 and didn’t know about the FBI and the cops didn’t tell her. So she went looking. She spent a year living out of a tent and hitchhiking. She got food money by doing odd jobs. On Christmas day she picked up trash from a convenience store parking lot for $5.00. She knows about needing help. That’s why every year we try to give some toys away. We let God “tell” us where to take them.

By the way, she found her daughter and got her back.

People condemning this woman would never dare to even think about taking her kids in for a while. They’re like Oprah.

I would say “God bless you” but I’m sure He already has.

I did the same thing in North Carolina. And, believe me, I could barely afford it. This young black lady was holding a baby and was buying milk, eggs, bread and orange juice. She had to tell the clerk to take the oj back. I asked the clerk how much it was and she told me. I said “I’ll pay for it.” The woman cried and just thanked me over and over. Of course, that brought some tears to my eyes and I said “Maybe some day you’ll be able to help someone. I wish you the best.”

By the way, I asked how much the oj was because I wasn’t sure I even had enough money to buy it myself. If I hadn’t, I was going to put something back that I wanted but did not need.

“I was hungry. And you fed me.” Who, besides the grandmother, said that?
