Sometimes you’ve just got to give people the benefit of the doubt. Hopefully she won’t shoplift again but he did what he thought was the right thing to do.
I see that as his prerogative as much as it would be the choice of any citizen. I doubt that paying for a dozen eggs was the only assistance he offered. Now that he’s aware of her and her situation I’m sure he will point her in the direction of some legitimate help.
