To which I would have replied - “In the military, we show respect to higher officers by saying Sir and Ma’am. To less senior personnel, we address them by the title of their rank such as Captain or Sargent.
If you are willing to be so informal as to allow me to call you by your title Senator, I will be happy to do so.”
