I rode through this area this past summer.
As a guy from the Northeast, the rigs reminded me of something out of War of the Worlds. Big machines, just pumping on and on, over and over.
It was eerie to see it go one for miles and miles on both sides of the road.
And Midland was just a huge mess of temp housing and lousy hotels.
Just a crazy experience.
For those who want to see a video showing how horizontal drilling and fracking is done, Northern Gas and Oil has a great one. Its 6 minutes.
It includes a visual piece on how fresh water aquifers are protected from contamination.

Here is another video, this one a walk-through of an ordinary type drilling rig done by a company CEO, apparently for his investors. No drama, just a real-life description by a real life guy of equipment and processes.
Im not connected with this company in any way. Not an investor, dont know anyone who works there, or invests in it. Posted for your enjoyment and education.
About 30 minutes.

It will be interesting to see what this landscape will look like in six months if the current drop in oil prices continues.
