The pilot of AirAsia Flight 8501 may have landed the doomed plane on the ocean surface, only to have it sink in high seas, according to aviation experts, who cited the intact condition of several bodies as possible evidence for the theory.
"The emergency locator transmitter (ELT) would work on impact, be that land, sea or the sides of a mountain, and my analysis is it didn't work because there was no major impact during landing," Dudi Sudibyo, a senior editor of aviation magazine Angkasa, told the AFP. "The pilot managed to land it on the sea's surface."
The theory that passengers were alive at some point after impact appeared to be supported by Jusman Syafii Djamal, the former transport minister, who said that the fact that the emergency door was found intact may be evidence that the door was opened.
The Airbus A320 crashed into the Java Sea on Sunday with 162 people on board. Sixteen bodies have been recovered so far. Seven were announced Friday morning, six of which were found by a U.S. Navy ship, said Suryadi B. Supriyadi, operation coordinator for the National Search and Rescue Agency.

So what? Did they jump out of the floating plane
in their seats?
Doesn’t make sense to me.
If they came down that easy at least some would have
made it out the exits.
According to a report this morning, some passenger bodies were found still belted to the seats, which to me implies a hard landing with a breakup. Still too much conflicting reporting.
That is the wisest statement anyone has made including the media.
The talking heads are just Making Crap up as they go.
Sad really.
Some passengers were still strapped to their seats. Often during a collision with a solid object (water doesnt compress and is considered a solid object), the ELT will break loose from the airframe and never activate. Some ELTs activate when water hits them, others required a velocity change of 2.3 +/- 0.3 G (4.5 +/- 0.5 FPS)
Evidence of attachment of floatation devices upon individual passengers would support this theory.
Parachutes
Autopsy will tell....water in lungs=drowning.....no water in lungs=death by impact.
Don’t agree. There would have been numerous survivors of such a scenario, given how quickly they were found.
Because the sharks weren't that hungry?
If they made a safe water landing, they would have had time to radio in during said landing.
Another thing that would help survivors; is the water would be warm.
Not like ditching in the North Atlantic this time of year.
No live survivors have been found.
So a successful ditching looks unlikely. -Tom
I have not heard reports of some bodies found strapped to their seats,
strapped to thier seats, bodys are not going to float or wash up on shore.
even if the aircraft did break up to be you can have that is successful ditching aircraft break in two.....could be live people in liferrafts
Makes little sense; investigators report that the body of several victims were nude, or clad only in their underwear at the time of recovery. That is consistent with a jet breaking apart at altitude and passengers being ejected from the aircraft. When that happens, clothing is literally ripped from the bodies of the passengers as they plummet to the earth.
What a terrible way to die; hopefully, most were unconscious (from hypoxia) before they hit the water.
A friend of mine was a British Airways Captain. I was a frequent flyer across the North Sea and North Atlantic. I asked him what were the chances of survival if we went down. His answer is if was a calm day, which is rare, he could set it down on the water and we would probably die of hypothermia. If we were able to deploy the lift rafts and get in, we would probably survive.

The talking heads gotta talk....
It will be some time before we have the official results of an investigaion. Assuming no reason for an official coverup, I can wait for the full facts to come out.
That's what happened in the MH17 crash.
