I admire your optimism. I do not share it.
The point remains, 'our people' caved for the price of a few committee appointments.

I suspect strongly that you are not.
Those mainly represent the power to direct favorable legislation to special interests who return the favor with campaign contributions. When those memebers retire the contributions can be turned into a nice slush fund. Before retirement those committee assignments mean more power and more money.
