I recently lived on Sint Maarten for 6 months. The Gendarmes there were heavily armed and respected. Just not enough of them.

I remember visiting Paris in 1989 and seeing Police armed with modern rifles on the streets. I was surprised by that at the time, as I'd never seen police armed like that in the states.

I wonder if you are confusing The French Foreign Legion with The French Army led by French Government Politicians.
I tell you what, some time today I will send you a long list of French Surrenders and then you can send me a similar list of French “Army” Victories. That way we can educate each other.
Now, The French Foreign Legion I have great respect for. But, we must remember, other than their officers, the rank and file in the FFL are not French. They are from over 100 foreign countries.
