Of all the statistics from the recent New Years Eve in Times Square1 million revelers, 2,000 pounds of confetti, thousands of police officers, dozens of surveillance camerasthere is one number that stands out: zero, as in zero tickets for low-level crimes.
No tickets for having an open container of alcohol, no tickets for public urination, no tickets for double parking, no tickets for furry, costumed characters hassling tourists to take their picture. Add in low-level arrests, and there was just one, for a subway-related offense.
And that wasnt just on New Years Eve. That was for the entire week containing the holiday. [ ]
Times Square is perhaps the most jarring example of a slowdown in low-level enforcement across New York City amid tension between rank-and-file police and Mayor Bill de Blasio, whom they accuse of encouraging violence against cops by siding with protesters after the chokehold death of Eric Garner. They were particularly incensed by comments in which the mayor warned his biracial son to be wary in dealing with officers.

An amazing number of people, and what a prime target for terrorists under the DiBlabbo regime rules..
The hard part will be acting surprised.
A chokehold is what the NYPD is putting on the city as revenue dries up for all the socialist giveaway programs it has set up to cater to The Poor.
A terrorist could have struck during New Year’s Eve too. Comrade Wilhelm dodged a bullet this time, but the city may not be so fortunate in the future if he keeps doubling down on his animosity towards the department.
I was relieved when Times Square remained peaceful during the New Years Eve ball drop. There were many serious sounding tweets and texts right before that.
What would have been nice is if the mayor’s biracial son had attended and he was the ONLY one to receive a citation for some very minor offense.
Good.
Wilhelm might need to send his blue jean wearing, Lesbian wife out to write a few parking tickets to bring in a little revenue for the city.
Sounds to me they had an astonishingly peaceful New Years celebration. Mind you if I lived a block off Times Square, I wouldn’t go downstairs, such mobs are just not my thing.
Undoubtably a few celebrants pissed in a corner, maybe even had a flask of ethanol. SO WHAT!? If no ruckus was raised, no one was injured, SO WHAT?
I am also glad it was not a terrorist target. Me, come midnight I was in my recliner with my beverage of choice watching a good movie instead of trying to count idiots in Time Square.
All one million had a single New Years Resolution — be a better citizen and person. And they all stuck to it for a full week. Color me amazed! What a wonderful start to the new year...no petty crime.
Who thought people weren’t perfectable?
Escape From New York. It wasn't fiction. It was prediction.
I’m sure the people on NYE were happy about being able to celebrate without being hassled by cops for petty shit. Actual life-and-death emergencies are still being attended to. Sounds to me things are as they should be. The slowdown can keep going, and expand for all I care. Bring it to Texas. I’d like to be able to use my cell phone while driving.
Anarchist!
Next you will want to buy groceries in plastic bags!
I doubt that the mayors son had the guts to attend.
Whoa, whoa, whoa! Let’s not go crazy here. That’s worse than murder!
That’s the same spin I put on this. Hehehe.
I hope to visit once more before the spring sets in, but while it is still cold enough to get good hotel rates. I figure that the weather should still have the senses of the criminals rather dull, and I may be able to get through the couple of days there without incident.
Saw more homeless and passed out drunks in Dec. than I have the previous two or three visits. They are allowed to stack their blankets up in the stairwells of the subways now apparently. Big piles - in mid-town Manhattan. Usually it just smells of pee.
I keep seeing these stories on FR with odd comments amounting to “this is what these idiots wanted, now they got it!” or some such.
Isn’t this what we want, too? Police not hassling people for tiny crap? Unless the city is descending into anarchy (which I imagine we would’ve heard about by now), this all strikes me as a good thing.
The crowd us strictly enforced. Once you arrive, you are placed in a pen. You cannot leave that pen for the rest of the night ... Think adult diapers. You cannot drink alcohol. You cannot wander around and come back.
People say it,s the worst. Do it once, but never again.
Your comment sounds interesting, but where were you placed in a pen?
