I've said here that I think that's what he was setting the GOP up for during the SOTU. The data filtering in in recent weeks does point to, at the very least, a sizable downturn sooner than later.
He wants to come back and say, “I had proposals that would have stopped this but the Republicans blocked them and now look were we're at.” The problem is by claiming the economy was so great during the SOTU speech is he took ownership of it.
When the downturn comes, it will be one following a recovery that hasn't fully recovered from the last downturn
