I was so not on board with it, because if they do it to Islam, any other religion is fair game.

It’s their country, not ours. We don’t have to be “okay with this.”
And if I remember correctly, it is the official, sanctioned religion of Italy.
I do not think Jews and Evangelicals will run into a problem in Italy. It appears to me this is a backhanded way to make religions apply for permission and in this way they can stop new mosques from being built.
Italy is not fearful of Jews and non-Catholic Christians. They are trying to stop the every growing threat from Muslims.
