The NFL suspended Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon for at least one year without pay on Tuesday for violating the league’s policy on substance abuse.

Gordon’s suspension begins immediately, the NFL said in a statement.

“As we have conveyed, we are disappointed to once again be at this point with Josh,” Browns general manager Ray Farmer said. “Throughout his career, we have tried to assist him in getting support like we would with any member of our organization. Unfortunately, our efforts have not resonated with him.

“It is evident that Josh needs to make some substantial strides to live up to the positive culture we are trying to build this football team upon. Our hope is that this suspension affords Josh the opportunity to gain some clarity in determining what he wants to accomplish moving forward and if he wants a career in the Nation Football League.

“We will have no further comment on Josh as he will not be permitted in our facility for the duration of his suspension.”

Gordon said last week in an open letter that his latest failed test was the result of drinking with teammates on a flight to Las Vegas on Jan. 2. He received notice to take a drug test as soon as he landed in Las Vegas.

If he was in first class it was a perfectly sensible thing to do. If he was in domestic coach class then, at $7 a drink, it shows poor judgement.

The Browns were off to a good start this season, until Josh Gordon came back. Coincidence? I'm a cynic.

Gordon and Manzeil on the same team....what could go wrong?

This seems to leave out the agreement with the NFL that he signed. The one stating that if he tested positive for alcohol, he would be suspended.

What punk on the flight dropped a dime on the dude? He was tested as soon as they landed. Someone snitched.

Seriously, one year for one drink? I know he signed the agreement and he violated the agreement so he is bound to park his keister on the sidelines for one year. But one drink?

Come on man!

‘drinking with teammates...’ why only him who gets suspended?

When a player gets to the point where he’s being suspended for a year over one drink, he has already been through so many disciplinary proceedings on other related matters that he’s pretty much a lost case.

Meanwhile Manziel is a certified drunk at this point, in rehab and at risk of being off of the team because of his behavior but was never suspended??

It would be absolutely counterproductive ... in fact, downright idiotic ... for a professional sports league to take disciplinary measures against someone who voluntarily checks himself into a rehab program. I mean -- why would you ever have a policy in place that serves as a DISINCENTIVE for someone to do that??

Besides ... these disciplinary measures are governed by the collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the NFLPA anyway.

I hate a rat, maybe someone did... but..
Maybe if he hadn’t got booted by Baylor, failed a drug test last year, got a dwi while he was suspended he could of enjoyed a cocktail. The league also reduced his suspension last year. He obviously isn’t too bright.

Maybe because the rest of them weren't on probation?

Like most jobs, if you have a substance abuse problem and you ask for help before given a drug test they let you go to rehab and keep your job. However, one of the stipulations is that you will be monitored and if you show positive, you get the hammer.
